I saw this earlier today...and it looks pretty awesome a big improvement over vista, not that vista was that bad anyways (use ultimate on my macbook with bootcamp)
Im glad they cleaned up the toolbar and have expose...the only two things that i liked about macs...
although i love how everyone's praising Win7 for being everything Vista wasn't, and saying how it demonstrates that major improvements could be made without breaking app compat...
...that's a lot of amnesiacs on the intertubes who don't remember that if not for the huge kernel changes Vista made (thus breaking app compat), Win7 (with only minor kernel changes from Vista) would not exist in all its glory today.
I like the fact that they have increased desktop real estate and decreased clutter...it looks awesome overall and it should work great with newer computers.
It's interesting to note that Microsoft appears to have trended towards a browser focused desktop layout, and have simultaneously released Microsoft Azure (for cloud computing applications)
Google is attempting to apply the same strategy in the development of their software except they are coming from the opposite side...the browser as the OS. Sooner or later the line between the two will be much more blurry then it is today and our desktop may simply be a customizable browser window (for example, a convergence of iGoogle and Windows)
i havnt really done my research but isnt Microsoft azure targeted towards businesses? and theres a monthly fee?
You're totally right...I think I meant in relation to web based applications as opposed to desktop based applications. It's a significant change in thinking for Microsoft.
Is it me or does Windows 7 makes Vista looks like an experimental project? Looks nice, but the taskbar looks a lot like KDE. Like Ether, I'll stick with Linux. Even managed to get Office 2007 working. :omg:
Windows 7's interface looks pretty Vista-like. One thing I'm hoping they'll fix is Vista's habit of reorganizing your directory appearances based on whim.
I actually decided to go to XP64 to see how a 64-bit XP stacks up against Vista. :P

I use FreeBSD (well, PC-BSD) myself on an ersatz home-theater PC box. I recently upgraded it to an A64 3000+ (which is why I'm vainly - so far - trying to sell my P3 Tualatin). All I had to do was compile in libdvdcss, and bammo :)
I'm sitting in front of my Windows 7 beta testing system and using the IE8 beta in it. I've got to say things look pretty slick right now. I can take some screenshots if anyone cares :)

Please do. I heard it came out on Friday. How is it compared to XP? I don't have Vista and don't plan to... so 7 would be nice.
Microsoft had legitimate ISO images for those who wanted to download it, as well. I got one of those and signed up for a beta key. If you had a Live ID (which anyone who uses MSN Messenger automatically has) you could have gotten one. :)
I like how microsoft has apparently just jettisoned Vista, even after their ad campaign to promote Vista was launched less than half a year ago.
But all OS companies do this, most OSes don't last more than a year and a half or two. XP was an exception though, that lasted nearly five years. Looked at other OSes, Ubuntu has a new release almost every year, Apple releases a new OS 10.X every year.
But yes, Vista wasn't their best decision ever made.
Actually MS extended the beta period and got rid of the 2.5 million key limit (they're just giving out ~10 universal keys to everyone now) because of their major fuckup distributing the beta. You can still download a copy at microsoft.com/windows7 right now.
I might write a review of the beta in next week's paper, but for now: installing everything I just wiped off my drive earlier today.
I've heard good things about 7 so far...even before this friday's release area people had gotten there hands on it...just like XP was a better version of 98 I think 7 is a better version of vista
just installed it. the taskbar is taking a bit to get used to -windows overwrote grub so i can't boot into Ubuntu now:( -running 41 processes right now, 34% memory, way lighter than Vista -i don't like the new msn

Any thoughts?

thanks for the offer though :)
It's more evolutionary than revolutionary

btw what's a good open source (free anti virus)?
On an unrelated note, the Windows 7 installation delete Grub. FML
AVG sucks, use Avira or Avast
