Last Day for Credit Cards

edited September 2008 in General
Tomorrow (August 31) will be the final day for credit cards being used on go.sfu.ca.

A few months ago, I have posted information on why credit cards are being removed. The post has been proof-read by a staff in the Faculty of Science Dean office.

    Hey guys, be nice. :)

    Thanks for the heads-up.

Anyone want to hold a credit card payment drive just to piss the school off? I know JayDub is doing it.

Yeah thanks, this would be good for the new guys coming up this year. I just hate to see them wasting their time lining up in the MBC when they could just just drop their cheque into the cheque box. This, to me, is not a good intro to SFU.

^ Your mom will spank you

I use the drop box all the time now. It's so nice. I even fax in my transcript requests and pick them up from the Grad Studies office. :P

(We often need to submit transcripts for things like fellowship applications and whatnot. The joys of bureaucracy in grad school!)

Theres absolutely NO reason to line up at MBC with a cheque, there is this thing called online banking.

Either get your parents to pay your tuition that way, or pay it yourself with your own account that way. I personally paid my tuition by credit card on Friday, before that I had been using online banking when we were not able to use credit cards.

Seriously now...you feel safer dropping off a cheque that might get lost? Online banking is nearly instantaneous

My checks never get lost, and I've been dropping my registration deposits off that way and my tuition checks that way for a while now. If it really concerns you? Put your checks in envelopes. *shrug*

I was more referring to what student is talking about with the hassle of waiting in line...when theres no need to wait in any line

Even with all of SFU's Student Service's fault, I think they are capable to do something simple such as cashing in my cheque and recording that I did.

There are always those who, at the beginning of the semester, line up in the MBC for no apparent reason. I don't know what they all line up for, but something tells me that they are lining up to pay their tuition or something.
I mean, if they all line up because their transcript got screwed up, then I call for a massive purge in SFU's Student Service.

Another advantage of dropping off your checks in the drop box is that the amount gets posted to your account at SFU that day, but the actual check clearing takes a couple days. So you get some interest on that money :)

Im thinking maybe international students may have no other way to pay now that I think about it, but I know someone who works in info and registration so Ill ask her what they all line up for.

Dear Andy, on behalf of 58,500+ students (seeing as how you go to both SFU and UBC) may I recommend: Ego Check Executive Wrecking Companies
hubris: a term used in modern English to indicate overweening pride, self-confidence, superciliousness,

No one executive is immune from that difficult-to-distinguish line that divides the self-confidence required of a successful CEO from the hubris seen at the root of so many corporate scandals today. We can count Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, Martha Stewart, and Jack Welch among the business leaders who have been infected with hubris at various stages of their careers – and seen their lives and companies suffer as a result. Every executive is vulnerable to hubris when they become dependent on wealth, status, and other extrinsic rewards for their sense of worth; when they embark on ventures that cross beyond their capabilities; when they unduly rely on the advice and input of others to execute their vision; and when they simply assume that their plans for the future will be realized without obstacle. Understanding these four key dynamics and the mistakes made as a result of falling prey to them will pave the road for business professionals to understand how they can guard against their own hubris while still building upon their unparalleled will to reach even greater levels of success.

    Kevin M., it's actually:
Ego Check: Why Executive Hubris is Wrecking Companies and Careers and How to Avoid the Trap

    Dictionary.com

ego: the “I” or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of others and from objects of its thought.

egotism; conceit; self-importance: Her ego becomes more unbearable each day.

    hubris:excessive pride or self-confidence; arrogance.

I've read the book myself and it covers the behavior of several people who nearly ruined their careers (and their lives) by keeping their egos unchecked and falling victim to hubris. I'm not a psychologist but I could draw clear similarities between those cases and the image I got of Andy from the way he came off on his posts, Facebook activity and his blog.

If he wants to donate his time and energy to being SFU's own Mother Theresa then perhaps he should start watching his act before expecting people to roll out the welcome carpet. Currently, he is coming off as extremely egotistical to a large number of people and obviously he's choosing to ignore that fact.

If he doesn't read the book may he at least ponder on the following quote.

I would much rather have men ask why I have no statue, than why I have one.
    - Marcus Porcius Cato
I suggest that mods lock this thread.

Maybe it's me, but I don't understand how andy is coming off as egotistical. Is it that line where he mentioned it's been proof read by SFU staffs? Or his shameless self-promotion of his blog? He's just providing a bit of a heads up to SFU students.
