Bad School Habits

edited August 2008 in General
Does anyone ever remember their first semester when they slack off, and then you tell yourself, next semester I'm never doing that again...except the semester after you basically do it again, but even worse.

I find myself now sometimes not doing any readings until the midterm, or for example, this past weekend I spent two days reading 8 chapters of a textbook I had not touched since the mid term.

As we speak, I have decided even though I have three assignments due on Wednesday, I feel tired right now and I'm not going to finish the two I planned to finish tonight, but I will finish two of them tomorrow while I'm at work, then finish the other at sometime around 3AM wednesday morning.

I tell myelf everytime I won't do it again, but I just push the limits more each time and get more craft of how I do it :zip: Anyone else agree or disagree?

Yes, its called procrastination. Everyone does it.

Some excel in it and others utterly fail. I'm somewhere inbetween.

or planning to read all your assigned reading and that somehow doesnt make it out of week 1, you know lil things like that?

Heh. :) I've heard of several other people who make the same kind of "new semester resolutions" and then forget about them a week later.

Really, I think it boils down to the adage "you have to consciously cultivate the habit". You have to make yourself go, even if you wake up at 7 AM and feel like you want to get another hour of sleep, but you know you have that 8:30 class and if you don't leave right that instant you won't make it.

Really, I've found that even missing a lecture or two can hurt my work somewhat; when I started getting into really advanced classes like quantum electrodynamics (PHYS 485/871) I made a point of it to go to each and every class.

I also tried to make a point of it to do all my homework assignments even if I couldn't answer the question. Just the act of trying to do the question can help if you see it again and you remember "Wait, I did it wrong the last time because I did thus and so, so if I do this instead..."

    :)

I live by my day-planner, so at the beginning of every semester I write out the readings/assignments/etc that are due on each day. It forces me to keep up with things because if I skip a few days, it becomes really overwhelming (especially with 5 classes, 4 isn't so bad).
I don't have a problem with not showing up to lectures or tutorials though.

I kind of do this. I would read 3 chapters of text and have absolutely no idea what I just read, but remembering how delicious the ice cream was.

I also do what randomuser do. Although, it is getting much, much better. This semester, I actually showed up to lectures knowing what previous course work the prof is referencing to.

I figured I'd bump this and remind all you new students reading this of the experiences of us old farts (or not-so-old farts). Triple's comments notwithstanding, the importance of not letting the new experience get to one's head is vital, IMO.

Well, that and I read an article today in 24Hours about the kid that died due to alcohol poisoning. :( It can be tempting to neglect studies in favor of partying, but not keeping a sense of balance and proportion about it can be detrimental as well.

ive been slacking my whole life and i still progress, i cant imagine what i could acomplish if I set my mind out to do something

I think it has a lot to do with maturing, as you get older u will learn to see what matters and be better at prioritizing

aint nothing to it but to do it, just force urself, think about how shitty u will feel if you dont do it and leave it till later, and think about how good u will feel the next day if u get it done now, reward yourself

make a list of things u need to get done in the day before u can do other things, and be strict, dont be afraid to suceed

I heard one thing that helps is to start doing something u hate everyday, (in my case making my bed) once that becomes habit, ull make ur bed everyday and ull suprise yourself, trains ur will power

work in small work loads at a time, dont think of an assignement as something huge that needs to be done all in one day, but rather something small that can be easily accomplished if you take small stabs at it

you can travel across a whole province in one night on a dark highway, even tho all you can see is the next 50 meters that is lit up from ur headlights

yeah sorry for the bad grammer and run on sentences or if stuff didnt make sense im ripped
