Humanities

edited July 2008 in General
Is anyone doing a major in Humanities?

I'm a first year student coming to SFU in the Fall and after looking through the Calendar I found that I liked almost all of the classes in the Humanities section. I was always interested in ancient civilizations and myths and that kind of stuff.

But I really can't see what I can do with a major in Humanities. I don't want to be a teacher... I checked the Humanities site and their "What Can I Do With A Humanities Degree?" link is down.
And there's really no career I have in mind. I would just like to have some sort of idea of the future.

Any Humanities majors (or minors) have any friendly advice? Thanks~

I'm not a Humanities major, but the SFU Co-op website is usually pretty good at giving sample jobs...although there isn't a lot.

As a Third Year History/ Humanities Double Major, I welcome you to SFU.

I am pretty sure you have picked your course already, therefore I won't be telling you what to and not to take. As for careers, there are some jobs out there that need Arts people. Ex: Museum, Archival, Law Enforcement...

id knock your list down to just museum and archival student ;P, you dont even need a bach to get into law enforcement

There's always archaeology. Being paid lots of money to carefully dig up places probably is cool for some people (not me, though, I'd wilt under the sun :P )

^I'll wilt under the sun too =p And I'm only interested in 2 ARCH courses.

I guess I'll end up being some sort of researcher at a museum... I like to learn about the stuff.

Student0667: Any advice for future courses? I don't think HUM102 will end up the way I thought (I hate poems, and most of the books are epic poems... argh).

In your first year, you should have fulfill your HUM lower level requirement by taking HUM 101, HUM 105 or HIST 106, and one of HUM 201, 202, or 203, plus two more humanities course.

For that two humanities course, I recommend HUM 130 and HUM 219.

P.S They will soon ditch the Philosophy course from the HUM lower level anyways, so ignore the Philosophy bit.

For future course, since the Humanities department got SO MANY things to choose from, you should take what you enjoy of course.

How was HUM 130? I'm not religious at all but I like the stories from it (like from the Bible, how the system of Gods wre created in many religions, etc.) is that the kind of stuff you learn?
Also, I'm worried some sensitive people will be angry at the arguements in the class =_= Or try to convert me or something

Actually, I haven't taken it either. But I plan to in 4th year.

Don't worry. I am a History major with a Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Concentration and I have not converted to Islam, yet.

Law enforcement or national defense. There are plenty of jobs in those categories alone.

You do realize that Jihad means "strive" or "struggle" and NOT "holy war," right?

however, the word works great for jokes...

    plus it sounds cool

No, it means Holy War. Saying that it doesn't is like saying that telling someone they're "fired" makes no sense because fire is an uncontrolled release of potential energy in a substrate! "Hah! You fool! Fire has nothing to do with employment status!"

...no. Jihad means holy war, because that's how it's used. I don't care about the etymology of the word. That's how the word is used, thus that's what it means.

its basically a self justified state of martyrdom that justfies people to use violence by any means against anyone of their choosing, the etymolgy proscribes the common meaning
