Different English Courses

edited July 2008 in General
Could someone please give me a brief outline of what these english courses offer?

ENGL 104-3 Introduction to Prose Genres

ENGL 105-3 Introduction to Issues in Literature and Culture

Because I need to take two english courses for my degree... I'm planning to take ENGL 101-3 and one of the above, but I can't figure out which one is better.

Thanks

    Obviously 105.

What the hell does 104 even mean? Introduction to Prose Genres? More like "Introduction to FAIL".

You can tell by the title that 105 is a course where you can bullshit your way through. Just write some stuff about censorship, etc.

    Take 105.

That reminds me of a tshirt slogan: "Prose before Hoes" lol

But yea, I would take 105 it sounds more relevant and easy to write about especially if English is not a major strength

I'm taking 104W right now. In this class we basically look at non-fiction books and articles, and think about how does the author demonstrate his/her ideas through their style of writing.

    one critical analysis paper
midterm (choose a prose passage and discuss the style and present a argument)
    research assignment

    that's pretty much it

prose is something equivalent to a short story.. it's shorter than a novel but longer than an article.. usually a quick read.. something you could plough through in one sitting.. now i'm guessing you'll probably be going through 5-6 of these for the course.. give or take depending the length of the chosen material.. if you like eng 101's pace and style of teaching i think you might enjoy eng 104 cause they only differ in the sense of length.. you're still reading as mentioned above non-fiction books and articles..

105 was great. I had Budra, but I imagine it would be a little more dry with another professor. He was pretty funny.
In that class we just ready 5-6 books, quizzes on each, presentations in tutorials, and two papers. Pretty BS worthy.

I took 105 in the spring with Christine Kim. It wasn't actually about censorship or whatnot. We had to write 3 major essays and her notes were horrid. The "issues" that we talked about dealt more with how society views certain aspects of the novels we read. Such as siamese twins and the notion of the disfigured body, physically and metaphorically. The ambiguous narrator that doesn't reveal their gender and how that would change our views of the novel being read. And other things that were quite unexpected. But the material varies depending on the professor
