Academic Probation?

edited December 2009 in General
Anyone know anything about this?
Read up on it, but if you are on AP or put on AP the next semester, are there a certain # of courses you have to take to pull your gpa back up?

    ALOT OF GPA BOOSTERS
  • edited April 2008
I definitely need some GPA boosters for this summer. I have a feeling my GPA's gonna drop below 2.3 after finals.
  • edited April 2008
    Man up and study.

    Here, read this thread...

    http://talksfu.ca/showthread.php?t=3061

It should answer everything you need to know about the consequence of not getting out of AP.

GPA BOOSTER doesn't exist. It is a myth.

You can never know which course you are gift in because the course name and outline are very deceiving in SFU.

Maybe he, or she, is just not in a program that's right for him or her.

what is a 2.0 gpa equivalent too in %?
  • edited December 2008
    Fail percent.
  • S56
    edited December 2008
Really? What is 50% in grade point terms?
  • edited December 2008
Depends on if the class is scaled or bell curved or not.
  • S56
    edited December 2008
Lets say there is no curve. I get 50%. Whats the GP? I'm just trying to get a rough idea here. I was told that 50% = 2.0 in most cases...

A C apparently. Depends on how it's scaled though. 50% could be a D or C- depending on the class average.
  • edited December 2008
    Well 50% is borderline D which is a ... 1.33.

Given that there is no scaling or bell curving.
  • edited December 2008
    a 2.0 is a C which is like 55%ish
  • S56
    edited December 2008
    55% is a C, so whats a C-, a D, and a F?

    fail. D = 1.00
  • edited December 2008
    6.5 = C+ = 2.33
    60% = C = 2.0
    55% = C-... which is a 1.66
    50% = D = 1.33

Now I have never received a D so I guess you IVT would be the expert in this field.

Yeah, just read the other thread that student posted: and they were saying go to college to take a course and then come back (If you are getting kicked out). I really recommend it actually, since I first went to Kwantlen (both richmond and surrey), and I really miss it now! (smaller class sizes, a more intimate setting, hotter chicks!) Although as much as I'd like to have stayed and completed my degree there, I think that university is the better bet because it's more recognized than colleges.

not necessarily. any 100 level course is better than a 200 or 300 level course.

Oh, and just realized that you're on AP, not getting kicked out.

I am so confused about the way grades are calculated. For example if I have a semester A, A- and B+, B, what will that grade be? How do they calculate cumulative grades?

Funny, I actually notice that most of the more popular girls (aka pretty) from my high school year are rotting in colleges right now. Now that you mention it, I seriously have to talk to my History Academic Advisor about the possibility of me taking some courses in Kwantlen or Langara during the summer and transfering it back to SFU.
not necessarily. any 100 level course is better than a 200 or 300 level course.
Say that to the B that I got in ARCH 100. I can't believe I will be taking another course with Prof. Hayden again in the Summer. (Vomiting Smiley)

Ok, so say your under 2.0 first semester, and your put on AP. For the next semester does your CGPA have to be 2.0 or above, or just the GPA of that semester.

just the GPA of that semester
  • edited December 2008
Both have to be at least 2.0 I think. You will still stay on AP if your gpa is 2.0 or above but with a cgpa of less than 2.0.

    hey y'all.. question...
just finished my first term.. took three classes
i think im gunna fail all of them.
LOL. now i KNOW it's because i literally did not study.
i did the homework the day it was due, never bothered studying,
    i had no work ethic.

now i'll get put on AP i believe?
is it true you're only allowed to fail 5 classes ever?
and also, is it very hard to get your GPA above 2.0?
    im taking PSYC100, PHIL100, CMPT120 and COGS100 next semester...

thanks.. im freaking balls so any response is much appreciated!

You have an interesting mix of classes there. Are you just taking whatever interests you? Or are those all to fulfil your WQB?

I highly recommend you take CMPT 165 if you want a GPA Booster.

And no, you're wrong. You're only allowed to have 5 re-takes. If you fail 5 courses and pass them all the second time, you're fine. If you fail an additional course but it doesn't bring your GPA to below 2.00, then you're also fine since you can just take a different course to fix the drop in GPA. If you failed a required course but it doesn't bring your GPA below 2.00, then I believe you can still re-take it after talking to an advisor (assuming you used up all 5 of your re-takes).

What if you were on probation, got out, and both your cgpa and gpa are below 2.00 the following semester? YAOWZA
  • edited December 2009
WHY DO YOU ALL KEEP PUSHING CMPT 165 LIKE AN E PILL

Look, it's not for everyone. I took the course and I flatter myself I'm rather decent at HTML and python but when I took it with Popowich I had to just totally pass on the last assignment - I just could not be arsed to sit down and try to mix the HTML and python like he suggested. It was around the time I was trying to complete the CMPT 110 DE assignment too so that may have been a factor.

    @mjm:

What I suggest you do is if your parents aren't going to explode like a Roman candle over this, and you feel comfortable talking to them, get their advice on what you should do next. Keep in mind our culture tends to bias people towards pushing to stay in university and factor that in when you talk to them. Most parental units do mean well, y'know. :teeth:

Then go and think about what you want to do. If you know which area you want to major in, sit down with the academic advisor and get a checklist of which courses are required to be in that major.

That will give you a kind of road map for the Spring 2010 semester, assuming you wish to continue on and try to get out of AP.

I suggest you not try to re-take the courses you just blew. At least not till Fall 2010. Give yourself enough time to get used to the mindset of succeeding.

Ever played a game and had to reload one too many times from a savegame? It's like that. Retaking courses can sometimes be like that one time too many - you just can't be arsed to do what you've done already (though you must do it better!). And that mindset will set you up to fail before you've even started.

Now, all this being said it is just another opinion among many. You are free to reject any or all of it as you please. :teeth:

Now, for my personal message - Psst. You. C'mere. See this shiny new Chemistry major? You know you wanna major in Chemistry.

HEY WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AWAY THEY'RE VERY NICE CHEMISTRY MAJOR PROGRAMS
