Any New Grad Students? (2008)

edited April 2008 in General
Hey all,

I'll be coming up to Vancouver from the states for my Master's degree at the Vancouver Campus. Anyone else going there? What about current students? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sure. I'm up and disposing of everything I know in my current life to start anew in a distant, foreign city which I've never been and know absolutely nothing about the school. So when somebody proclaims that its awful and that I shouldn't do it, I'd like to know WHY..

Because there are two many good mountains nearby so when it comes down to riding season it is hard to choose which mountains who want to buy seasons passes for.

Ooh, Urban Studies sound cool! Speaking of Urban Studies, you may want to stay away from the part of town past the Victory Memorial, 3 blocks down from Harbor Center. That part of town is the seediest side of Vancouver called Downtown East Side.

    stay away?
its sweet there, can buy legal drugs to mess you up, lol

I know! That area is where I make most of my profits.

Good to know. I'll keep that in mind when apartment hunting in spring. So I gather it isn't much of a college campus, that much I'm aware of, so I assume its only graduate programs at Harbour Centre? I know there's hardly a better location to conduct urban studies than downtown Vancouver which is partly which I chose the program...

Yeah universities in Canada are not the same as colleges in the states.

Harbor Center is sweet. Having classes downtown would be a joy, especially in summer semester.

You know in terms of the place, i'm sure u'll love it in Vancouver....but it really depends where u come from lol (like if ur from Alberta...lol)

Man, people here are just negative...dont listen to them haha

Sure, the Burnaby campus isnt very pretty...but quality of schooling here in topnotch. Go through Macleans university rankings...SFU is ranked up there every year.

What kind of background do you need for the Masters of Urban Studies? Is it a MA? or..MSc?

lol ooey he's from the States.

    which part of the states?

it's very urbanized here, fast paced, you won't find many friendly people on the street, you'll see AMAZING cars if you're a car enthusiast.

Thanks for some feedback guys. I'm just finishing my Bachelor's at the University of Denver but I am originally from rural Idaho. Metro Denver has a higher population than Vancouver but it is FAR less diverse and FAR more decentralized. Really, the two cities cannot be compared.

Urban Studies is an MA program and my background is in Geography with an anthropogenic and urban emphasis. I could care less about the aesthetics of a campus, its the teaching and amount of research being conducted that matters most.

Are you guys undergrads? Grads? Originally from Van?
