Language Proficiency Index

edited June 2008 in General
So a job I want to apply for after I graduate requires I take the Language Proficiency Index. It requires a minimum score of 5.
English is my first language, I got a B in grade 12, and I took Engl 199 and got a C+.

Would I need to study to get a 5? or is 5 pretty easy to get, lol

thanks

Is it just the essay portion where you need a five or does you need at least 60% on the remaining sections as well?

You can not study for the LPI, the stuff on there are quite random and arbitary. I did the LPI twice and I got a 4 both times.

    It just says:
A minimum score of Level 5 on the Language Proficiency Index (LPI). For more information on the LPI, please visit www.ares.ubc.ca/LPI/index.html.

i got a 5 in one try and english is my second english.. but i did have frd in the same boat as me who failed twice... like student said.. it's pretty random..=\ one tip i can give you though is that the essay portion tend to revolve around social issues and life lessons.. so before taking the LPI.. i suggest reading some newspaper and watching the news.. other than that.. just use what you've learned about the english language...

and oh.. if you can.. try taking some practice exams to ease the exam anxiety if you're prone to it and to brush up on the grammar portion of the exam.. it's pretty tricky at times.. =D

    good luck!!

where can i get practice exams?
  • edited April 2008
there used to be a site where you can d/l the practice exams.. but i think it's been taken down now.. you can see if anyone has a copy of the LPI workbook which has a couple of practice exams in there and answers to look at..

which looks something like this: http://www.ares.ubc.ca/LPI/124_study_materi.html

how long did it take you to finish?
  • edited April 2008
In the first part, they give you a sentence with a few parts underlined. You have to decide which part got grammatical error.

Part two consists of __________________________________ (SRY, I forgot!)

Part three consists of a big paragraph and you have to reduce its length.

    Part four is essay.

part two is either reading comprehension or a continuation of part one.. i'm quite certain it's one or the other..

Like siuying, english is my 2nd language and I also got a 5 on the LPI the first time.
I believe there is some sort of trick or strategy to it. Like others have stated, the essay is the main portion of the exam and if the marker can't decide on the essay whether you will get a 4 or 5, he/she will use the other sections to determine your grade.
For the summarizing part, you need to keep it 3 sentences or less, and your essay should have at least a medium length with good intro/transitions/conc.

whats the best level you can get?
  • edited April 2008
lol @ IVT's pic... yeah and that too.. =P

people say that you might not find a decent job after graduation.. but everyone learns to master the art of bullshit in univeristy... and that's about the only thing useful you get outta your 4/5 years..

Hmm I wrote the LPI when I was in grade 12 just in case I did miserably on my English provincial. Anyways, I got a 5 and I don't have the best writing skills. I think that if you can demonstrate that you can speak English fluently getting a 5 isn't that hard. Getting a 6, the highest mark, is a whole different story though.

The exam is broken down into parts but the most important part they pay attention to is the last one: the essay. They give you about 3 topics to choose from and you write a somewhat argumentative essay. I remember writing/arguing about the usage of cellphones while driving.
