Quitting TV & Internet

edited April 2008 in General
I've come to the realization the 6-8 hours a week I watch tv is time I could be doing other things so I'm quitting TV. I also thought is it even possible to quit the internet? I can't think of how I would live without it now.

I don't think you can quit the Internet entirely since we rely so much on the computer nowadays, and when you're on the computer, you're basically on the Internet. Plus a lot of stuff for school needs to be done on the Internet... you pretty much can't survive without email. I dunno I guess you could quit things like Facebook if it's a problem.

lol i'm having a 24 marathon with my best friend Jack Bauer on tvshack.net

    double whammy!

eh i'm cutting myself some slack. i'm sick with the flu so it's not like i'm gonna do anything else anyway haha
i don't ever watch TV unless it's the news. the internet on the other hand is nearly impossible to quit if you have it readily accessible... the longest time i've gone without checking my email was two weeks...and i was stuck in the woods camping...but i was thinking about how much email i was missing out on lol

was it that obvious? haha email wasn't the only thing on my mind either. no showers. got lost. had to bushwhack uphill. need i say more?

but yeah the internet is so much more entertaining than tv. and i agree with flo-ra, we depend on the internet so much now.
hard to believe only a decade ago we didn't rely on it as much. my sister is only eight years older than me and she's like "when i was in university i didn't have online databases to look for resources. so stop complaining."

    heres a question:

is watching TV Shows online considered watching TV?
  • edited April 2008
I barely watch TV anymore. I watched 'The Celebrity Apprentice' when it was on, and I watch the odd re-run of 'Friends.'

I used to be ADDICTED to tv....my god, it was nuts. Thank god i dont watch that much tv anymore.

i haven’t watched tv since gr 10 or maybe earlier
too much of a waste of time, and the shows are lame with all this "reality" bs
i mean ya ill turn the tv on maybe 1-2times a month but i won’t sit there more than 5mins

as for facebook i quit that shit on april 1st never liked that site from the start but i must say it was a great medium under which to organize events since most ppl had it
honestly facebook aint that different then the crap that came before it, xanga, asianave, friendster, vx, nexopia, etc...

Who needs TV when you have the internet? I've got LOST and 2 episodes of jPod downloading.

im so done with tv, i like reality tv but the people i want to win never do--and its getting repetative now, i will miss you tv my dear friend, but alas i cant do it anymore
    its not you, its me

I rarely watch TV anymore. I believe the last time I watched TV was when I was trying to catch the news about the moron trying to blow up UBC...

However, I confess that I heavily depended upon the internet to survive. In fact, I began to worry about my dependence on the internet.
  • edited April 2008
^ Our dependence on the Internet is not really something we can control anymore... our society in general has grown dependent and things are now set up so that we NEED to use the Internet. I mean I guess someone could quit if they really wanted to, but they'd fall behind everyone else. I mean besides email now being one of the main modes of communication, imagine not being able to use online sources for your assignments at school (like meesh mentioned)... it's possible, but the Internet just makes things so much easier and it really puts you at a disadvantage when everyone else uses them. Apart from stuff like that, a lot of our generation's culture is fostered on the Internet (on sites like Youtube). So although it might be something to worry about, we pretty much have to accept the fact that we wouldn't survive without the Internet.

As for TV, I never really had an addiction with it... I catch a few shows that I like, but other than that I just don't have time to fit it in with school and work and everything else. All my free time basically goes to procrastinating on the Internet =P

I am more concerned about rouge states or terrorists organizations exploiting our dependence on the internet and as a part of a campaign to undermine our interest, they would cut off or disrupting our internet access.

Go ahread, make me a tin-foil head in the next meetup...

what's worse is when your shows only show up at 12am-2am on school nights. eg. the ultimate fighter/ufc fight night on wednesday nights.

i only follow TopGear & FifthGear and i don’t really think its same as watching tv as
1 they don’t even have it here
2 it’s an informative show, for example watching edmunds.com videos is same shit with less fancy camera work
3 so is YouTube tv then too? =S
tv is tv and internet media is just that =P
