edited February 2008 in General
Hey... How do I go about getting a place off campus as an undergrad? Since I've never rented before, I don't have any references. I'm not working either. Not gonna happen? Advice plz :)

You don't need any references if you are renting somewhere near SFU. Most of the people around here have rented to students before, so thats who their main tenants are. You can find a nice place off of hastings, or even in the north road area. Bettter yet, you can rent at univercity if your lucky. It costs a little more up here, but if you're serious about school you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle by being able to walk to class.

You can find places online at http://www.och101.com/
    or
    http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/apa/

You can also try checking the bulletin boards around school, there's usually a lot of places available half way through the semester or a little bit later.

    Any other questions just ask

you usually only need references for really nice places, or everywhere in the downtown core when renting, most places ive seen in the burbs dont even ask, just pay your deposit and they dont care

how do they trust that you will pay the rent if you don't give them any references from a job or character references? are you guys serious, they will actually give it to me?
Also, can you get any place that is decent without being locked in for a year or 6 months? What are some good strategies to negotiate this?

when i rented i used the off campus housing website given on the sfu residence webpage. since the people there were targeting students, most were going on a semester time length, almost all prefered fall and spring semester though.
i think you can just go month to month too in alot of places.

Canada is all about honesty and trust. Most people will believe you.

I hope what I sense is a little bit of sarcasm lol... it's kind of true around here though, just be honest about your intentions and how long you plan to stay for, and people are usually pretty accomodating. Renting a basement suite or something like that is usually pretty informal, the only real protection the tenant has is the deposit (half the months rent) that you give when you first move in. So if you take off one month at least they have something. IF you are renting an apartment or something more professional (ie. from a property manager) than you have to sign a lease and stuff like that

most places trust you will the pay rent in two ways:

you have to pay the first months rent before moving in, and the security deposit will cover the next month if you skip out

Well, the damage deposit is only half a month's rent, but meh.

You know, 10-15 years ago I don't know that I ever heard of people checking references when renting. Now, apparently, it's become more common. Weird, that.
