  • edited January 2008
its difficult yah, but I found that hes so charismatic (and loud) that its hard to fall asleep :P

Yea, Crim 230 is no laughing matter. I'd recommend doing it through distance education.

Hey randomuser, are you taking any other criminology classes this semester?
  • edited January 2008
agree with insatiable.. did it through distance and though there's a crap load to read the exams and essays are pretty straight forward.. no surprises.. =)

Just taking 103 and 230 cant take any others until I declare which will be next semester

Any advice? im sure you know about the teachers, verdun jones and boyanowsky

boyanowsky even said in class that the exams would be based on lecture and book, but i dont know what to exact from verdun jones

    expect the worse haha
if you need others before you can declare a minor (?) in crim, just take anything being taught by uh crap whats his name... Cartwright i think
  • edited January 2008
Ive already taken every group b requirement, and most of my group b requirements for my upper division so im running out of courses to take haha
  • edited January 2008
I dunno if you're majoring or minoring in crim now :P
  • edited January 2008

They've gotten really lenient with you guys. I declared back in uh, after the summer semester of 2006 I believe. Back then, it was every single requirement to the dot, grades in and all, before they let you declare.

My last requirement was stats 203 and I ended up with an A+ in the course, but will they let me declare in time for my reg. date? Of course not.

I'm bitter of course. Very very bitter.

Verdun-Jones, with all of his eccentricities and humour gives out super hard exams. A buddy of mine took 230 with him and he told me that the fact pattern is the hardest thing he ever had to do, no joke. A good professor doesn't always mean you'll receive good grades.

Boyanowsky is a crazy old fuck. However, his lectures are pure entertainment. He'll touch upon every topic in the social sciences and somehow tie it all together. His lectures completely differ from the text. For the midterm, study the lectures only. It's a fairly easy three essay questions (at least it was for me, but I don't think he'll change any material because he's either too unreceptive or too lazy to do so). The Mass Murder book is to be read only for examples to corroborate the theories you learn in class. Some of the midterm questions will ask you to draw upon examples. I don't think you'll be asked specific questions from Mass Murder.

Just pray when you receive the final because it was the most unfair final I ever had to write (unfair as in unjust, not difficult). He gives you 40 multiple choice questions, half of which are literally on topics not even spoken about in lecture or mentioned in the text. I don't know why the fuck he'd do such a thing, the nasty bastard. The average for the final ends up being in the low 20s apparently. I specifically remember it was unfair because I studied really hard for his class and listened to his lecture recordings many times.

If I were you, I'd drop both classes and take them through distance, no joke. I hope you're not discouraged, but it may be an uphill battle for you this semseter. Anyways, if you have anymore questions, just PM me :teeth:

you kidding? The mass murder book is reading for enjoyment
I havent read anything more interesting/easy to go through since that text. Its like, a page turner. I swear.

    PS: Don't judge me.

Did anyone ever actually make a lamp-shade out of human skin? Because that's what people always say: "I'm not going in there, I don't want to be made into a lampshade!" But did it ever happen?

    Hmmmm...

Alot of truth here. 230 is very tough. I like law, and found the classes interesting; the actual concepts are not hard to grasp, but his exams are marked VERY harsh, as well as the paper. Overall It's definitely a tough course, and DO NOT TAKE IT IN CONJUNCTION WITH CRIM 220 (research methods). I did, and it killed me last semester with the amount of studying. Note that I took both classes on campus...

As far as Boyanosky goes, I've just started 103 with him, but his lectures are pretty entertaing...sorta worried about what others have said about his exams though lol. He goes off on so many random tangents that I often have no idea what I should actually be paying attention to.

Nah, you're not crazy. I expected it to be lame and boring but it's definitely the most interesting thing I've actually had to read for a course yet. Good thing too because I find the other 103 text completely boring.

Didn't read the other one and all the exam material were from there
Needless to say, I didn't do well
