BOL I & II

edited January 2008 in General
Just received the introductory email this morning.
Has anyone completed BOL I or II? In it right now? I'm walking blindly here...I have no idea what this entitles, but it's a requirement for Co-op so I figured I'd get it done ASAP.

I just signed up for BOL I before the break. I wish they'd send me an email. They said I was "accepted" but I haven't heard anything for weeks.

You'll complete BOL I and BOL II through WebCT. I think they send an email out the Friday before your designated BOL course begins.

BOL I is really simple, there are a bunch of modules to complete (they send you a schedule and let you know what you should be completing each day, but if you have time you can complete them ahead of time).

You basically answer reflective questions they give you in the discussions and you have to post them on the discussion board (eg. give an experience where you _____, what is your dream co-op job and what skills do you have to get it, or find a job and write a sample cover letter for it, etc), and you should have at least one constructive response to another peer's posting.

It's very straight forward, and when you complete the course they will email you the week after with a pass/fail.

That definitely gives me a little more of an outline, thanks!

And Ether...I signed up for the first available time frame, so like meesh said, they e-mail you the week before you begin. So if you're not in the first week of January you'll likely get an e-mail later.

Ah.. thanks. That makes sense 'cause the first session was full when I registered.

... and after getting the email I completely forgot I was even taking the course until last night. It started today.

Ya, I just finished it today and I hear back tomorrow I believe.
It's good, just make sure you join in the discussions often.

I did BOL1 last sem. It was really stupid. They make you do all these discussions about the same thing, like what skills you have and how you can apply them to your future job. Then you do a resume and cover letter. It really doesn't help at all.

You don't need to do BOL2 until you start your coop term. At least that's what my coop advisor told me.

BOL is useless. Go on webct, join in on the discussion using common sense, and you would've wasted $90.

Please don't repeat my mistake: if you are in science, you DON'T need to do BOL to join co-op.
  • Hi! I'm new to co-op and registered for BOL I at an unfortunately hectic time in my life. This has, regretably, led to my inability to fully participate in the discussions and modules. I am curious if a failing grade in BOL I has any effect on one's cumulative GPA??
If someone could help me out with an answer I would greatly appreciate it! :D

Did you actually fail? As far as I can remember, it was pretty much marked for completion and I know several people who have done the entire course in an hour before the deadline and still passed.

Edit: Also, it *is* useless. Unless they refuse to let you in to the online job system, just forget about it.
  • I actually put effort into BOL I and regretted it. Some of the people in my group gave awful responses, and everyone passed.

I think my favourite part was where they compared snowboarding to employment and claimed that avoiding rocks required planning, making it a transferable skill that you could list on your resume or cover letter.

Seriously. That was in the official course material.

Are you freakin serious?? That's hilarious!!! I don't remember that from when I took it! I did BOL I back in Summer 2007 and, at the risk of sounding like a dork, I actually found it kind of...useful! I thought that the whole Business Co-op program, including BOL, helped me learn how to write a good resume and cover letter, which helped me get a decent co-op job and a decent job after.
