edited December 2007 in General
so the pickton trial has ended and he's been charged for 6 accounts of second degree murder.. the sentence is life imprisonment and eligible for parole after 25 years.. news reports state that while he is charged for 6 accounts.. there are another 20 that wasn't charged..

i'm curious to see what are the thoughts and opinions on this...do you think it was a justifiable conviction? and would you issue an appeal?

i'll share my views after.. =)

The other 20 charges are coming, but in a different trial.

    1. To the people/media complaining that he didn't get convicted of first degree murder... Is this really a problem? Either way, he's going to prison for a very long time. It's not like some psycho on the street is going to be watching the news thinking "oh boy, I'll go whack some hookers 'cause I'll only get convicted of 2nd degree murder". Regardless of the actual conviction, he's pretty much in prison for life.

    2. A HUGE problem I have with the media in trials like that one is the fact that the general public was basically told that Pickton was guilty from day one. In this case, it was correct, but what if he was actually innocent?

Over 10 pages of this god-forsaken story in The Province. Im so sick of seeing it on the news everywhere. He should be thrown in jail for a very long time and then that'll be the end of it.

Ugh, not to mention just looking at his face gives me the heebie-jeebies.

    *shudders*

Well, for 2nd degree doesn't he only get 25 years and he might get out after 10?

someone who's familiar with canadian law can verify this.. but from what i know.. that is correct.. 2nd degree murderers are eligible for parole after 10 years.. and usually most charged with 2nd degree are given this eligibility around this time frame.. however i was surprised he was given 25 years.. which is equivalent to 1st degree but yet he's charged for 2nd..=\

@baby e: yes.. his picture gives me the creeps too.. @_@

@ether: it's not really a problem if you think about it in terms of jail time.. but given the idea that the law courts are there to serve a fair judgmental cause.. i think the people/media are looking at whether it was a justified conclusion.. i guess it would ease their minds if he had been charged 1st degree in light to what he did as opposed to 2nd degree.. to them pickton probably got the better end of the deal.. sentencing wise..
