Custom Ringtones?

edited November 2007 in General
Does anyone know any newer phone models that allow you to make your own ringtones via your computer? I'm on a mac now and I had to "unlock"? or hack my razr with a program to add things, all the ones telus provided were absolute shit and expensive. I wouldnt have minded paying if they didn't all suck, telus wont even let you download commercial ringtones from other websites.

I think my razr is almost dead, the battery seems to discharge really fast as of recently and Im guessing since Ive tampered with it I dont qualify for a replacement

well are you signed with CDMA(telus/bell) or GSM(fido/rogers)

if you're on GSM, it shouldn't be a problem buying a new phone. if you're on CDMA on the otherhand, you have to buy one of THEIR CDMA phones, which means paying more than the phone is really worth.

cdma, the phone is barely a year old and when i bought it their invoicing was down so i didnt get a receipt so they emailed me one but it got lost since i never anticipated my phone dying so soon i thought if i went to the same booth in pacific center maybe theyd give me a deal but im being hopeful, too much so maybe

i don't know too much about where to get the CDMA phones but i've been told London Drugs sells them for under $100 ( word of mouth by a friend who was in need of one )

in terms of ringtones, CDMA phones tend to be more restrictive on their extra options such as bluetooth and ringtones, i don't know how to get around to get custom ringtones. but if you have a data transfer cable from your pc to your phone, it shouldn't be a problem to drag and drop unless they have software inside the phone restricting custom .mp3

If you followed the instructions on here:

    http://hacktherazr.com/guide.setup.usb.html

it should give you access to the entire file system of the RAZR. All you have to do is upload your ringtone, and make sure that the RAZR thinks it's a locked Motorola original file. I believe there's an option to do that in the P2K Commander program that's also accessible on the site.

Edit: I read your post wrong, it appears I'm retarded, and that you did figure out how to customize your RAZR. New phones with Telus that aren't Motorola won't be easily hackable. The reason being that Telus installs their own interface into the majority of their phones, with a few exceptions: the Samsung M620 and the LG 8700 (Shine). However, you can still only use default ringtones, or tones purchased through Telus. The only way I ever saw around this was using WMA ringtones, which works on a few Rogers models. Sony Ericsson is great, cause they have a DRM packager that allows you to copyright any mp3 file you want, and use it as a ringtone, even if the Network carrier blocks it, but unfortunately they don't make phones for Telus.

I'll tell you what, I have to work tomorrow (I work at a Telus mobility store, unfortunately. Telus sucks, switch.), and it's pretty lazy anyway, I'll try using WMA ringtones on all of our phones, and let you know which ones work. I'll also let you know if I stumble upon anything else that might be of use.

For my RAZR, I just downloaded the torrent for Motorola Phone Tools and used my sister's MP3 player cable with the same jack.
