Interesting, but some of the connections she draws aren't really backed by anything more than, this person worked with that person who was on the board for this and once was part of so and so.

It's like all conspiracy theories, not saying it couldn't be true, but there's not really much backing it up right now.

It really doesn't bother me that some random person could find out where I go to school, or what my phone number is, or who I'm friends with. If anyone wanted to find this information about me, they could probably do it in a short time period with or without facebook's help. The fact that large marketing corporations or the government have access to it means nothing to me.

Anyone who is concerned about their personal data being viewable to the public should have the sense not to post it on the internet in the first place.

That's straight fucked. I've been expecting a facebook betrayal since day one, and it seems the day is getting closer and closer. Why do people feel comfortable sharing such intricate details of their lives on such a corporate platform?? I know the marketing companies don't give a shit what my personal political views are, but on a large scale, we have fed them (yes, it's too late) an enormous amount of data that they will use against us in one form or another. That is the brainchild behind facebook...it's the reason so much money has been pumped into this website. You don't give a fuck? Thanks for caring about the good of society

Who cares about their privacy policy. Who is idiotic enough to put anything really sensitive on it anyway? Basically a good rule of thumb is "Would I want my mom to see this?"

I don't think it's anything new that companies are collecting information about us for their own purposes. I think the real problem here is that most people know this already, yet voluntarily sign up and use sites like Facebook on a daily basis, despite knowing it. They've become such social-networking whores that they don't care, because Facebook is the ultimate popularity contest, and whoever has the most wall-posts and friends is the coolest.

I personally lost interest in Facebook within 3 days of signing up from a friend's advice, and rarely check it. He assured me that it was the "best thing ever", and I beg to differ. Social networking sites in general are nothing more than a glorified way of making people feel like they have more friends than they really do. You deserve to have your privacy breached.

I use facebook, and don't care. I get a cool service, and in exchange they get to use my info to better target their stupid marketing initiatives. Explain to me why that ought to bother me.

I mean, you didn't think they were running facebook out of the goodness of their hearts, did you? I fully respect their right to be compensated for providing a service. This seems like a way of doing so that has exactly zero impact on me - exactly the sort of way I like the most.

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with it at all. Like I said, it's been happening long before Facebook. The thing that does piss me off are the nuts out there who complain about how Facebook is taking and selling their personal information, yet continue to use the service despite of that. If you're going to complain, then don't contradict yourself by checking your profile 10 times a day.

Personally, I really don't care about companies collecting my personal information. I don't really put enough of it up anyway. Nor do I think they care too much about myself, or other people. Hell, I run my own website, and have more personal information up on there than I do on Facebook.

Besides, all they're really doing is market research, to see what these crazy teens are listening to/watching on TV, so they can put out more of that crap. I really doubt it's anything more sinister, like some dudes sitting at a computer masturbating to those pictures you have of yourself in a bikini at the beach (although that might be true).
