Just saying hi

edited July 2007 in General
Hi everyone! I've transferred from kwantlen to sfu and started planning for courses. I think I have my courses figured out so that's good. But I heard about this "bell curve" grading policy from friends and I'm really worried about it. What exactly does it mean? What are your experiences with it?

curving isnt a particularly good or particularly bad thing

just means the marks in the class are graded on a bell cuve distribution, so a xx % of the class will get a's, xx % of the class will get b's and so on with the class average settling around c+/b- range

i personally perfer the curve, piece of mind knowing i wont fail if im just average in a hard class

Hi, welcome to the site. Imelting pretty much explained it. If you are an average student, the bell curve system is actually helpful!

    Hey there,

Welcome to the forums. Like imelting said, curving is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. If the class is hard and curved, then it's good. If the class is easy and curved, then it's not (because you'll do well but won't get the corresponding grade).

Usually (although no prof will tell you this but I know from experience), the bigger the class is, the likelier it is to be curved. Business classes are practically all curved and so are most first- and second-year arts classes.
