W Standing on transcript, how serious is it?

How serious is it to have WD on your transcript? Will it effect my undergraduate or even graduate career? I've been having trouble in a class and I'm considering dropping (deadline is July 9). Wondering if anyone could clarify this WD for me. THANKS!!!

    It won't affect your degree at all, but it will affect your chances of getting into grad programs. For example, if you apply to a master's program or a law school, they will probably want you to explain why you dropped the class. If you only have one WD, it's usually ok but if you have more than that then your chances of getting in are a lot smaller. But it is better than failing, because it would allow you to focus more on your other classes. Good luck with your decision.

    Also, there is a withdrawal under extenuating circumstances (or even a retroactive withdrawal which you can apply for even AFTER the term is over), which may apply in your situation. There is a thread on that here. Maybe go in and talk to a counsellor. SFU isn't trying to stress you out or give you a hard time. They have things set up to help students who get in a bad situation... and we've all been there!
