Group projects...dealing with losers

edited June 2008 in General
We have all been inconvenienced by some idiot in a group project that:

- doesn't communicate;
- doesn't do their work;
- makes you question SFU's admissions process;
- is a general douchebag.

Share recommendations or horror stories or how to avoid getting into poor groups.

    During my time at SFU, I had to do 2 major group projects. Both group contained around 8-10 people. The key to success on major group projects is to divide up the work at the beginning of the project. Make sure each member understand their role and responsibilities.

    BTW, at the end of your group project don't your prof allow you to evaluate your team members. If your team member performed poorly, the prof may lower their grade. This may serve as an incentive for every member to peform their duties.

    In my CMPT 275 group we had one loser who didn't do anything. He would submit one small piece of code and then in the SVN logs the next few updates had comments like, "FIXING xxx's CODE", "STILL FIXING xxx's CODE", "REPLACING xxx's CODE".

    In the end we suggested to the prof to read through the SVN log and she saw little work he did, but he managed to get the second highest mark on the final.

    just ignore the ones who don't do shit and let them fail their portion miserably. In your evaluation make note of it, and it won't affect everyone else's marks.
