Why do uni students like alcohol?

edited April 2007 in General
For those of you who like alcohol, list the reasons why you do. I don't get why drunkenness is equated with celebration (the "work hard, party hard" mantra, where "party"= alcohol consumption)

    Interesting question!

I don't drink at all, and I haven't for a few years now. However I still have to answer "why" I don't drink... which just shows how much it is expected that people should be drinking to have fun. I also have friends who get very concerned for me when I don't drink at their parties. It's very odd...

My stepdad has realized lately that he's an alcoholic, yet there is just as much pressure from his middle-aged friends to drink and get drunk as there is among university students. So maybe it extends beyond our age group?

    -It tastes good
    -It relaxes you
    -You bond over it
-It separates the 'work' personality to the 'weekend' personality
    -It makes you feel good
    -Meet new people
    -expand your social circle

I think the biggest reason is the stress releif aspect after cramming hard for exams

haha this is an interesting question since I decided to go out with my friend last night to have a few drinks for no reason whatsoever (or perhaps it was for the purpose of getting through the Wednesday blues).
i don't go overboard with my drinking--I usually have 2 or 3, which is just enough to make me relaxed. i guess for me having a few drinks helps me de-stress myself from school.
also, i think going to a bar or something is a good reason to see some friends, and to get together for some much needed socializing time.

i don't understand binge drinking though. it's just painful...

hmm.. i'm not exactly sure about the tasting good thing.. i've a my share of nasty ones.. and i mean nasty.. X( i've been wondering the same thing too.. i've never gotten drunk that i don't rmb things.. but i've been drunk to the point where i just felt sick and unable to move.. and when i got over it.. i would be like "what did i ever do that for? that was seriously stupid".. then you get into that cycle again when your frds call etc etc.. things happened and i realized i couldn't be so reckless anymore.. plus my friends drink until they're completely gone.. and i'm usually the one who takes care of them..

but i don't regret drinking for that matter.. because sooner or later you'll get exposed to it.. i just take it as something you got to experience in life.. and once you know what it is and what it's like.. set some boundaries and stick to them...

Same reason university students do the many things that they do (whether stupid, or not): peer pressure, and the need to fit in.

i stopped drinking and i don't plan to start.
Unless it's a bday party or going to clubs.
I have a REALLY high alcohol tolerance level. so you can see why drinking is boring....
