Laptop: Which Brands are Decent?

edited March 2007 in General
I like HP but i'm looking for some other opinions and suggestions.

What do you all think of these following brands,

Compaq
Toshiba
Acer

Also,

Which processor do you think is better, AMD64 or Intel Dual core?

With all these names it's getting confusing (Turion, Sempron, Centrino etc.)

I have an Averatec, which was extremely cheap when I bought it and isn't bad for what I paid. The only thing is it gets really hot on the bottom, so it's more of a "tabletop" than a "laptop"...

If I could have a do-over, I'd probably get a Sony, Toshiba or a Panasonic. They are very sturdy and work well from what I've seen!

k well from what i can see from your post, you're quite inexperienced with gimpuuuters...

at the moment, go for a core 2 duo processor,

what EXACTLY are u going to use this laptop for?
    school? games?? just internet??

    what's ur price range??

    sony's are expensive,
dell's are worth the money you pay for

do you want your laptop heavy?

toshiba's are heavy in general unless you pay $2000+

panasonics n sony's are light and expensive

    so give more info!!!

If you want a cheap entry level computer, get an Acer. For top brand I would highly suggest a Dell as their customer service and warranty is outstanding. You would want a Intel Duo 2 Core Processor over an AMD 64x2. Both give you "2" processors in one, but the AMD tends to overheat and because you are using a laptop with limited fans, you wouldn't want an AMD chip in there.

What is your price range? Oh, don't buy from BestBuy/Futureshop unless they have a crazy deal. Go find the magazine called HUB and search in there.

Check out Anitec. I was in there today to buy some more RAM and they are very nice in there! They also have a new location which is really snazzy and has tons of stuff.

They even had a PINK leather(looking) laptop. I'm not a girly-girl... but it's cool to see something that looks a little different than just black or grey!

i personally have an ASUS, it's a great laptop, with all the features that you could possibly need, battery life is really good (3 hours using the high performance mode...there's battery saving mode too). and startup is really fast even though i have a crapload of stuff on my computer. :)

but if i didn't have this laptop, i'd get an IBM ThinkPad.

so basically the good ones would be either Toshiba or Sony

i work at staples so i can get you 10% off the systems if you intend on buying one.

i wouldn't suggest buying a sony over the toshiba because many models have just about the same specifications, and both companies offer international warranties for 1 year, SONY brand makes the machine cost at least a hundred dollars more because of the branding.

    typewriter.jpg

I suggest this. Word processor and printer in one. The days of paying high prices for printing at SFU are long over.

Sadly, I don't think MSN works on that thing.

I actually have a manual typewriter much like that. It's a 1960s-era Ollivetti.

Where all the mac users at? Apple definitely makes the best notebooks, you just have to decide whether or not you want to switch to a different OS as well.

    ASUS. That's all you need.

    Holy Shite;

Macs are the only laptops anyone should be buying.

Why upgrade to vista when you can upgrade PAST vista with Mac OS X.!

I'm running a lenovo, its a pretty dope machine, ive heard bad things about sony, hardware malfunctions, overheating, poor quality casing etc, therefore its not worth the money. Acer makes pretty solid higher end machines, but even their entry level stuff is okay, and dell is def worth the money.
