Free Workshop for new 1st year SFU students: Constructing Arguments in Academic Writing

Designed for 1st-year undergraduate students for whom English is an additional language (EAL), this three-day workshop focuses on language strategies for critical argumentation. Students will learn how to:

  1. identity critical argument structure in an academic text
  2. practice expressing a cautious stance using critical thinking skills
  3. recognize the limitations of their own arguments and consider counter-arguments and opposing views
  4. practice writing counter arguments and rebuttals
  5. make effective connections between ideas

There is no fee for the course, but the cost of the required textbook is $40.  Required textbook Academic English: Skills for Success by Legg, et al.  Textbooks will be distributed on the first day of class. The last day to register is Monday August 28, 2017.
