I'd honestly start by learning on your own regardless of whether you plan to take a class. Make a friend or two who are fluent/native and practice with them regularly. Use online resources like duolingo. If you can find them, Pimsleur's "audio tapes" are awesome for teaching some basic conversational stuff. Far better than Rosetta Stone. Full disclosure: I've tried these for other languages besides French, so I can't speak to the French-language-quality of them.
