CMPT Course Selection Advise CMPT 310, 471, 431, 433

Hi,
So I am on the waitlist for 276 at position 5 (think I'll probably get in) and CMPT 310 at position 13.

Right now, I'm looking at courses that I can take this term and as in title, there's 471, 431 and 433. These courses still have room to enroll than the 300 level courses that's why I'm looking into these 3 in particular rather than other 300 level courses. I kinda want to take 471 but that would collide with my 310. Anyone taken both of these courses can give me some advise which is easier?

Would taking 276, 471, 431 and 433 altogether be an overkill? If I take 3 of the 4, which 3 would you suggest me to take?

thanks, much appreicated.

  • What year are you in?

Of that lot, 310 is the easiest. 471 isn't terribly hard, but the workload is consistent. 431 is a lot of work and is predominantly programming assignment based. So how hard you find it will depend on how at one you are with parallel programming. Then I haven't taken 433, but from what I know of it it is also a lot of work, but my guess is that it is still a little easier than 431. You can find past websites for this course to get an idea about it.

    So I would say the difficulty is 310 < 471 < 433 < 431.

Yes I think taking 276, 471, 431, and 433 would be overkill. In fact, it is a combination of courses that doesn't make much sense to me. Most people taking 276 will be in second year. Since you are taking it in the fall I would guess you are in third year. Assuming this is correct I would focus on 300 level computing electives.

If you are looking at the 400 level ones simply because they are what is open then I would try to get into 310, then look at 471 and 433. Have you taken 371? Did you like it? if so do 471. Do you have CMPT 300? Did you like that? If so do 433.

Otherwise I would explore doing an elective as a last course. I would also have a backup plan for if those waitlists don't fall your way.
