CO-OP Pay!?

edited February 2015 in General
Hi everyone,

I had some questions about how much one would make doing co-op. Do the co-op postings have the pay listed? Is it alright to ask during the interview? And how much have you made (if you've done co-op) and with which employer?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Riley,

Most co-op postings list the pay. From what I saw, many of them are in the 12-15$/hour range.

I got lucky and made 19$ per hour. It was an arts co-op position.
  • I find the tech jobs usually do not list the salary on the job postings.

I suppose it would be okay to ask during an interview, but I would be careful how you go about doing so. Pay will always be disclosed in the actual offer you receive, so the only time I think knowing about the pay a few days earlier in the interview would be if you have competing offers.

In terms of pay, tech generally seems to range from about 12/hr to about 40-50 USD, plus perks.
  • IBM CANADA $24-$25 if your 4th year.
    MICROSOFT Canada $4000 a month
    SAP $22
    SMall companies $16

If your in tech best to do a usa co-op with dollar difference.
  • money's not THAT impt imo, it's the experience really
  • IBM $22/h.

    BlackBerry: $20/hour.

Microsoft Canada: $21/h. If you get a relocation package, then it jumps to $29/hour. You only get relocation package if you live 40+km away from their office.

Microsoft USA: much much more (I've heard around $40/hour including relocation package).

I know these salaries from personal experience.

  • Wow guys, thanks for your responses. I could never have imagined making $40-50/hour in co-op. Would you happen to know the names of any of the companies that pay this much?
  • There are internships that even pay $50, but you need to be really smart for that. I know that Palantir pays $50/h including relocation package.
  • Should make it clear that these salaries are for software engineers. And also these represent the top percentile of jobs, not everyone gets these, thats why the average drops to probably something like $17-$18 an hour.

    Samsung pays $20/hr.
Also, do not ask about salary. You are mainly there for experience and I've conducted interviews for my replacement. If you ask then I'll get the message that you are only motivated because of money. Best not to bring it up. If they accept you, they will tell you the wage in the email.
