Computer Science Internal Transfer?

edited January 2015 in General
Hello everyone,

I am currently in SFU Business and I am enjoying the work but I am also very interested in combining it with a STEM Major. The main reasons for this are as follows...

a) I would like the technical skills of a STEM Education to give me expertise in the Technology Industry.
b) Better Starting Salary & Future Earnings (Business in this regard was disappointing for me).
c) I really liked Science in High School and did well in it. I just did not like my teachers. Hence I choose to focus more on Business rather than Science but I regret it.
d) Computers interest me & I like Math.

As such I am looking at doing the Computer Science Joint Major. I have the following questions I would really appreciate any advice.

1) How is the Grading for Math 150, MACM, CMPT , & ENG courses? In Beedie we have a preset Bell Curve where regardless of the result there are percentages of the class designated to earn certain Grades to keep the courses HIGHLY competitive. In Science courses is it Bell Curved too or is it more close to your grade in absolute issues. (Before you ask I have not taken Math 157 in my first semester (fall 2014) not because I fear Math or am not good at it but because I wanted a light course load in the beginning). I realize now I could have done better for myself.

2) Although Admission is Competitive to the Faculty of Computer Science and the Minimum GPA is 2.4 what is the true GPA that you 'really' need. Example Beedie to transfer is 3.17.

3) What is the GPA needed for SFU Computing Science Co-Op?

4) What are the best ways to get help if you need it?

That is all thank you.

    1. The grading is not curved, but it could be scaled up. It really depends on the instructor and the class grades. If the grades are very low then they'll usually scale up. In the CMPT courses I don't think they tend to scale down (usually), so there are quite a few high grades available. That being said, the only business course I've taken is BUEC 232, and it was MUCH easier than most courses in MATH/MACM/CMPT. I think I can confidently say it was the easiest course I've taken in my time at SFU. So just be prepared for a different style of learning I guess. I don't know if all business courses are like that, or maybe it was just my instructor (Andrew Flostrand), but that was my experience. I think as long as you actually do the work you should get a good grade, just don't come in to it expecting the courses to be similar to business courses.

    2. Just remembered when I was transferring I talked to an advisor and they linked me to this section of the website: http://www.sfu.ca/students/admission-requirements/admission-averages.html . I think it's lower for internal transfer but they don't explicitly state that. My GPA was pretty high and they let me know within a few days of applying that I was accepted, so the transfer process is nice and smooth at the least. I'm assuming that if you maintain a 3 you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

    3. I think the min GPA is a 2.7? but I know that there are people with less in the program, so you don't have to maintain that.

    4. An advisor. They'll really help you out.
