SFU "prison" enough to depress

edited February 2007 in General
i found this article from the PEAK. just thought of your opinions on this matter.

http://www.peak.sfu.ca/the-peak/2000-2/issue8/le-sfu1.html

Summary:
"Everywhere you go all you see is disgusting, dirty concrete, I'd rather be on a nice, huge campus, like UBC, where at least you can find something decent to eat, enjoy the view and experience university life as it should be experienced. It's an understatement to say that SFU is an unappealing and unwelcoming university campus."

for some reason, i must say i really couldnt agree more.

When I went to SFU I just went there, took my classes, and went straight home. Umm, I even made my schedule so I won't have any breaks.

On the other hand, most of my classes were located in westmall so it wasn't too bad. The AQ building is especially depressing I think.

if you couldn't agree more then you should consider heading out to UBC.. =)

honestly i don't know where all this hate about the campus started.. i think SFU is a lovely campus.. sure it does get gloomy and dull during the winter and rainy days.. but atleast you don't get rained on.. and unlike UBC where most have to run from building to building on the huge campus within what.. 5 mins? i should thank the architect for making SFU an averaged size and interconnected building..

and who could deny the fact that SFU is beautiful when it's sunny during spring time? just take a look when you have the chance tml.. we have the best views.. the clouds and mountains... plus we're situated way up on a mountain... who could top that?

I actually like the SFU campus, the only thing I don' like is the food, which is on the same level as prison food and super expensive. I had the chicken souflaki sub at MR sub today, I don't think that was chicken at all.

yea, i dont think i looked at it in that light. especially since this is my first semester so i have only seen sfu Winter and sfu January. The view from westmall is pretty spectacular. but i think its the overall gloominess of it that is getting to me.

    I'm split on this topic.

First, I very much agree with siuying! The views are breathtaking and I love sitting in the sun and looking at the mountains. Or on the grass by the pond! Plus the air is nice up there and I'm sure you learn best at high-altitudes.

But I do think the concrete has an outdated feel to it. One part that particularly bugs me is the walkway from the library to the West Mall, past the Women's centre. It's so dank and concretey... Plus it feels like I'm walking back in time! The Rotunda is right out of the 60's and desperately needs a make-over!

I'd like to see an SFU Beautification project started up. Especially for the inside areas.

I'd also like to buy some buckets of sidewalk chalk and find some artists to decorate up all that concrete!

    UBC > SFU

    Period

i just think aq is a lil too gloomy, rest of it is ok, gets kinda cold in the winter, and the commute can b a bitch during the winter as well

ubc has nicer structures, just seems newer and tidier

overall i think ubc is nicer than sfu, but sfu has a killer view in certain places and can be really pretty

Part of the problem is that most people come to SFU and then complain... nothing is stopping you from going to UBC!

Where is our school spirit, people?! THAT is what is lacking... far more than a glass library or a rose garden...
  • edited February 2007
speaking of which, they need to make those sfu hoodys a lil cheaper so i can rock some school spirit :s

SFU isn't that bad once you get used to it! Every campus has its plus sides and downsides, at least we don't have to walk in the rain to get to classes and we have cleaner air up in the mountain i think hehe

    Their crappy grades are.

I personally like SFU and actually chose this uh, concrete depressing hellhole over the magnificent beautiful campus of UBC.

Nyeh... I've GONE to UBC... believe me, a lot of the people who go there are as pretentious as the campus looks. I hated it there.

You can still go to SFU and visit the UBC campus whenever. It's not like they hold classes in the rose garden...

i'm sure you'll want another say about SFU once you've seen what it's like during spring time mikie.. you'll definitely like it.. =) the food though.. i would unfortunately have to agree with everyone.. it sucks.. and it even sucks more when UBC has a cafe de crepe and we don't even have anything close to a dessert bar!!! *cries*

@malakaiii: speaking of classes.. i went to a class in UBC with a friend once.. it was a long lecture and dude.. their chairs killed my back.. =(

@gawdawful: i like to believe that when there's a will.. there's a way.. and if the concrete of SFU is bothering people enough.. they'll try everything they can to get out.. including upgrading their crappy grades.. =) i still rmb the thing that made me choose SFU was that they offered a me a scholarship and UBC didn't.. lol... sure the commute sucks.. avg 15 hours on bus per week? but i didn't regret choosing SFU over UBC.. i like this campus more..

    Winner.

I actually chose to come to SFU. Both schools accepted me, but what cna I say, I didn't feel like taking two hours everyday to get to class.

SFU isn't too bad. In the winter and summer it's lovely. It's only really when it rains and it's grey that it kind of looks depressing but then I can't think of too many places that look too damn great in the rain.

    lol....

Did you know many ppl that fail to get into UBC come to SFU?
  • edited February 2007
yeah doing a 4 hour chem lab on a friday afternoon in a cement prison is a depressing way to kick off the weekend
  • edited February 2007
aside from vancouver, its pretty much name recognition of ubc > sfu (rest of canada, states etc)
thats prob the only reason i regret choosing sfu over ubc, got accepted to both as well

and seriously, the chairs in some of the lecture halls are BRUTAL
  • edited February 2007
Gotta work on your schedule planning there, Jimmy! I have Fridays off! Whooooooo!

And I got into UBC. And dropped out after a month. Now, you couldn't pay me to go there! If I want to hang out on the beach or in the rose garden I can go down there anytime, but at least I won't have to deal with sorority girls or stuck-up profs!
  • Honestly, my grades are good enough to get into both UBC and SFU. I still choose SFU because of its great view and its academics. I don't wish to bash on anyone, but if concrete makes you depressed, you need to find new joys in life. You are on a mountain! Fresh air and great view! What else do you want?
  • I actually like how it's all concrete! Looks cool!
  • and to each their own...it's more than the buildings and views.  When you pay for your tuition you should pay for the quality of education and I feel increasingly both schools have taken the "corporate" approach of education and turning it into a very profitable business. (Not saying universities don't have the right to make money but to what extent? when it's affecting the quality of education it offers and to student learning experience)
  • Also the concrete buildings might "look cool" but it's a very old building and it leaks every rain season.
  • Hey buddies,

When it's gloomy outside, check out the recently founded facebook page for SFU, called Humans of SFU (inspired by Humans of New York),   http://www.facebook.com/HumansofSFU

BTW, I don't think UBC has a similar community page on facebook.  I love SFU.  ;-)

    Have a nice day!

  • This is my first year at SFU and I find the concrete so depressing.

But I will admit that it does look cool from the outside. Saywell looks pretty modern but everything else is pretty dreary.

SFU is small compared to UBC but there is a bright side, at least we dont have to get run in the rain to get to class. UBC is big but it must suck to get to class.

I personally like SFUs view :D especially from the ROOF :D Its very pretty after it rains ^^
  • I wouldn't mind the concrete... if it didn't block the wifi signal in all my lecture halls and most of the AQ.
  • Hi sahmed,

I will relay your comment to the folks I know at SFU IT Services.

  • i love it when sfu is foggy and u cant see shit. just saying. hate that theirs so many trees though and you can't really see the surrounding mountains. the tons of busses already mess up the air so we should cut the trees down and watch the environmental students hug them!
