CGPA actually needed for accounting concentration

edited May 2015 in General
I am a first year business student and I am wondering what CGPA is actually needed to get a position in the concentration of accounting. It says 2.70 on Beedie's website but what CGPA is actually needed to get hired? I have heard it is upwards of 3.5 is this true?

  • According to Michelle Iorio (SFU Managerial Accounting Prof and long time KPMG accountant) the big 4 firms use a "cutoff" GPA, and if you're below their "cutoff" they automatically throw away your application. So if you're aiming for a big 4 position (which most...if not all...accounting students are) then yes, I'd say you'd want to have at LEAST a 3.5. That being said, corporations are ALWAYS going to need accountants. It's a skill. Even with a lower GPA you will most likely be able to find work for a smaller public firm or private firm (given that you have lots of extra-curriculars and/or work experience).

Keep in mind that you have to apply to the accounting concentration now...I think that most people who are admitted would have a significantly higher GPA than 2.7 (since you have to beat out 50% of your BUS320 class for admission)
