MATH 240 with Jonathan Jedwab or MATH 232 with Randall Pyke

So I need one of these two courses for my degree, and I'm wondering which to take. Math 240 is allegedly more difficult than Math 232, I consider myself quite capable with MATH courses (As in MATH 150/152, and MACM 201). However, I don't know how 240 or 232 stacks up against the courses I have taken. The instructors are both interesting. Jonathan Jedwab has a 3.1 overall rating on RateMyProf, with 1.8 on easiness. Randall Pyke has a 2.1 with a 1.7 on easiness. MATH 240 is on Burnaby campus, Math 232 is on the Surrey campus, which are roughly equidistant from my house. I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with any of these instructors and courses, so that I can make a more informed decision.

    You are fucked either way.

     232 is still easier though....this is actually depressing news to hear those are your options LOL.

    I'd take 232 and go to pykes office hours and get to learn what he wants you to know and get above average on exams.

    240 is harder than 232. Has more proofs. Both courses are hard, but based on your math history you should do fine in either course.

    I took 232 with Pyke. I liked him. I think many of the bad reviews will be based at least in part on people having a hard time with the course. Don't know anything about Jedwab, but he sounds decent too.

    If you are in Math you should probably do 240.If you are in computing 232 is fine, I would choose the one that fits into your schedule better.

    I'm currently debating between Operations Research and Computer Science. Not sure which yet. How would you say 232 or 240 stacks up to a class like MACM 201?(This is the only other second year Math class I have taken)


    Why am I screwed either way?? Do you have experience with Jedwab??

    You are not screwed. I was a software systems major. I would say 232 is comparable to 201. If anything it is probably easier. If you took all of the computing majors and asked them which course they hated more, I would expect more people to hate 201 than 232.

    Another thing to consider is Pyke sometimes teaches Math 208w, the intro to operations research course. If you haven't taken that yet, and are planning to at some point, maybe 232 would be a good introduction to him. I also took 208 and quite enjoyed it. It was very interesting, and not terribly difficult.
