Online Course Grade Appeal - Criminology

edited April 2015 in General
Of course the home page of talk SFU is flooded with questions about this same thing but I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with appealing a grade from an online course for crim, meaning only the TA is responsible for instruction and grading.
  1. The TA gave me a C- on the term paper (16 pages of pure genius), only commenting on the first two pages and then telling me she didn't give me any feedback because I didn't 'address the assignment' ( my 4,000 words begs to differ) and I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't bother reading my paper at all. As per her personal special policy, I had to wait 72 hours before sending in a 1 page explanation to her about reconsidering my assignment mark.
  2. She graded my take home final exam and gave me a C- on it as well, but no feedback was provided. According to her logic: because it's a final exam.
Anyways in the middle of the course my dad was admitted to the hospital and I told her, but she seems bent on being very rude and very hard marking in lieu of my father being in poor health. There was no rubric given for the assignments, all instructions were very vague. I Cc'd the professor on the assignment appeal and all he did was send me a copy paste about the appeal process. I've contacted the ombudsperson to talk about appealing but in all honesty I don't know how effective my appeal will be.

If anyone has any stories or advice they could lend me I would appreciate it. I'll be applying for a WE for some courses I took in 2013 for a separate issue but at this point it just looks like I'm full of excuses when I'm really not, I know I deserve a better mark.

Comments

  • I want to appeal too
  • Are you by any chance talking about CRIM 455 and the TA Tarah?
  • Just take that C- like a man.
  • That's sexist. What if Astra's a woman? Then you should say just take that D like a woman.

I think you should go to the ombudsperson first and the formal appeal process. I mean you already went this far to make an effort I think you should go all the way and use all available resources.

However remember, any remark could always go both ways, you may end up with an even lower mark. But if you're truly confident you deserve a better grade then I think it's worth it. That policy is really just there to deter the grade-grubber kids who do actually shittily and try to get any bump up.
  • Hahah that's dangerous, I don't want to say who the TA is but it is a 400 level crim class. Is that TA bad as well? I've never had one so set on not helping me learn from my mistakes.

Thanks TalkUBC, that actually does make me feel better. Hopefully the ombudsperson gets back to me on Monday with an appointment time.

For the record, Astra is a woman!
  • But we all know males are superior to females, so either way, you should take that grade like a man.

    Just kidding, don't eat me.

Don't give such distinguishable details if you don't want us to figure out the TA or class lol. it is very obviously CRIM 455 you are talking about. I didn't particularly enjoy the class or the TA myself, but I managed an B+ so I guess I can't complain too much.
  • Crim 455 isn't the only course that has open assignments like the one I described, especially considering that I haven't taken (nor do I intend to take) any courses in policing, but thanks for the blatant assumption *lol*. Congrats on scoring the B+, I'll be sure to take it in the fall for an easy A.

lol, no one knows who you are so its fine for complaining about Tarah. I agreed with everything you said about her. But nice deflecting.

PS. I agree that her "no feedback b/c its technically an exam" excuse was stupid and unreasonable
  • Haha I knew iT! Astra sounds like a female cartoon character name. Like a space-girl that fights evil aliens defending a planet far far away with a male space dog sidekick.

LOL @crimematic. Using criminology policing skills to deduce who the TA in criminology is. And fail Astra trying to make it not seem like TA Farah by using distractor question of asking if that TA is bad too. hahahaha that was funny in a cute epic fail way.

  • For a thread on advice for the appeal process, I don't see how any of crimematics comments are helpful? I honestly couldn't care less if you think I'm trying to deflect, but whatever helps you sleep at night.
    Thanks anyone else who contributed!
  • Crimematic you're lame.
Why would you call someone out on that.
Regardless of if Tara is their TA or not. That's rude, buddy
  • Astra92 A lot of people try to contest their grades through their parents health problems etc so make sure you have good medical documents and paperwork. Not saying that your dad wasn't sick but just be very careful
  • I honestly just found his comments kind of funny in a cute way on Astra's part but you're right it can get dangerous if real TA name-drops and/or clues about particular courses get exposed. Like the TA might use this site, but I highly doubt it. But if the final grade was given already I don't see how anyone could use it against you, it's not illegal.
