Econ 102 with micheal solymon

edited November 2014 in General
Hi,

I haven't taken any previous econ courses, so I thought starting with econ 102 is a good idea, how is that course with solymon?

Thanks

  • I took 102 with Michael and thought he was great.

On the whole 102 is a pretty straight forward course. It targets non econ majors, and most of the people in the course have not taken econ before.

The workload is pretty light. The assignments are on the easier side. The tests are a little on the harder side though, especially if you haven't taken any other econ courses. ECON is a bit of a weird subject where some of the stuff often seems unusual and counter intuitive when you first learn it.

The class is also curved. Considering the curve and how econ is often weird for first timers I would say it would be a pretty easy course to get a B-/B/B+ in, but a difficult course to get an A in.
  • Oh okay thanks! Also what if I wanted to take econ 103 with iryna instead? Would that be too hard?

  • I took 102, 103, and 104. 103 is the hardest of the three. It is also targeted towards econ and business students, so it is a little more competitive.

I took 103 first, which made 102 and 104 easier for me. Of the remaining two I would say I think 104 was a little easier than 102. They are similar though.

If you are interested in econ though I wouldn't say it is too hard, just harder. I would not recommend 103 as a random elective though. If you aren't particularly interested in econ you will likely have a bad time. 102 and 104 are more approachable.

    Thanks for all the help!
Who was your prof for 103 ?
  • I was a sessional instructor about 3 years ago. I don't think she teaches it anymore.
  • Hi Ryan,

I just have another question, allot of people say that micheals exams seem like they have random questions? Is that true?
  • As I said, the exams are a little on the hard side if it is your first economics course.

I didn't find the tests random, but I know others did.
