Academic Probation

edited November 2014 in General
This is my first semester at SFU and I am almost certain I'm gonna fail at least two courses this semester. How does academic probation work? i have gotten mixed responses. Do you go on AP if your gpa is below 2.0 in the first semester or after two semesters? How do you get out of AP? What is BOT? And when are you required to withdraw? I checked on the sfu website, but I'm still confused.

  • I'm pretty sure it is when your GPA is below 2.0 in your first semester. After that, you will need 2 continuous semesters of having both the semester GPA and cumulative GPA above 2.0. If you have one below the 2.0, you continue on academic probation the following semester. If you have both below 2.0, then you will be required to withdraw. Hope that makes some sense. I am guessing BOT is the back on track program? I think that is when you have been out of school because of poor performance, and you apply to get back in. Not so sure about that one though.
  • If your cumulative grade point average (CGPA) ever falls below 2.00, you will be placed On Academic Probation (OAP). As long as you continuously get over 2.00 in your term GPA, you will not be required to withdraw. Once your GPA goes back above 2.00, you will be in good academic standing.

For example, if you get below 2.00 this term, you will be placed on academic probation. In your following semesters, you just have to maintain a term GPA of above 2.00. If your term GPA is below 2.00 when you're already on academic probation, then you will be required to withdraw (RTW). If you are required to withdraw, you can enter into the Back-On-Track (BOT) program which gives students a second chance to re-enter back at SFU.

    Hope this helps :)
