CHEM 282 - Wait a term?

edited September 2014 in General
So.. Organic Chemistry. Not really my strong suit.

This semester it's offered with Andrew Bennet (http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=43070). One lecture in, I can already tell it's going to be brutal. Doesn't give out notes, goes really fast through topics.

Next semester it's being taught by Neil Branda (http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=43070&pageNo=2), which seems to have much better reviews although they are quite old. Does anyone have any experience with him? Is it worth waiting a term to get a better prof? I don't want to just base my decision off ratemyprof.. haha

Thanks! (:

  • If you feel like you'll do better under another professor then take it with him, also I'd go visit them in office hour to get a general feel of the individual
  • Professors Branda and Bennet are very different in terms of their approach to research in organic chemistry and teaching. Professor Branda is a material organic chemist while professor Bennet is a medicinal synthetic organic chemist. Both can teach Chem 282 properly but I think their style are very different. I agree with your observation about professor Bennet but it is not clear how professor Branda offers his course because he has not done it for a long time! I believe it is up to you to work hard and get a good mark regardless of the course professor. Goodluck
