SFU Course Repeat limit policy

edited August 2014 in General
Hey guys, I read on the SFU website that the limit for repeating courses is 5 times. I was wondering what happens if I require a 6th repeat? Has anyone had experience with this before?

  • You must ask for permission before repeating a 6th course.
  • I was told by my advisor that it is highly unlikely to get anything over the 5 repeat limit...best to ask an academic advisor first before asking permission for anything in SFU.

Apparently there is a specific "format" in which the permission must be made...by writing a letter in the most formal way without the help of an academic advisor wont get you anywhere.

But then again, that is just what ive heard. Doesnt hurt to meet an advisor nevertheless though
  • You can retake a course 5 times? Isn't that a huge waste of money??
  • Well if you pass it each time yes. In this case though the question applies to retaking courses you failed. You can only retake a total of five classes. After that if you want to retake another you need special permission. If someone fails a course after using up all of their repeats they could feasibly be blocked from completing their degree.
