CRIM 241 OR 251?

edited July 2014 in General
I have an interest in both of these classes but don't know if it's worth it to take both...?

Anyway, any thoughts on these courses?

(Prof for 251 is Joshua Murphy, 241 prof is Glen Brown) - thoughts on these profs would be appreciated as well.

  • If you're going to take only one, definitely 251. Especially since its a perquisite for upper div policing courses (351, 455, 458, etc.)
  • Is the 251 interesting? I kinda like watching police reality shows, I am wondering if I would find this one interesting.
  • If you're only interested in police reality shows then definitely no. You actually learn about what real policing is, not what its like on TV
  • @crimematic: One of the reasons that I wanted to take 241 is because on the course outline, it said that there was a field trip to a federal prison and I think that would be super interesting. However, I'm not entirely sure if I want to continue on with the Correctional Studies Certificate. 251 seems interesting but I'm unsure if I want to go pursue a Policing Studies Certificate - I read that it's geared towards those that aren't even looking to acquire a degree? Any thoughts?
  • I would honestly suggest taking both if you can.

For CRIM 241, I took it online so I didn't get a chance to go on a field trip but I would have loved to. I found the material to be very interesting and eye opening. It was based more on a restorative justice approach so it gives you the opportunity to rethink.

For CRIM 251, I took it with Adam Vaughan so it might be different for you. His lectures were only 40 minutes long because we did group work afterwards which was fun. We also went on a field trip to the JIBC. And he brought in guest speakers from the VPD and RCMP to try and recruit students for their programs so it was good if you're looking for a future job/volunteer experience in policing. The material was also interesting.

I don't think its geared towards those not getting a degree.
  • @crimematic thanks for your thoughts. Are you/have you been pursuing one of the Criminology certificates?
  • Well I'm majoring in CRIM and I planned on minoring in police studies but because of how hard it is to get into CRIM courses plus the fact that I want to do the practicum (which takes away 5 classes + 1 more for CRIM 369) I dont think I'll be able to do it in time before my intended grad date
