Cmpt 275 and 276

edited July 2014 in General
Hello everyone. I am a software system students and for us, cmpt 276 is a required course. i wanted to take it this fall so i could apply for co-op next term but it seems it is not being offered. But cmpt 275 is. I've heard they are not much different. Should I take it? And who do i have to contact that will enable me to take this course instead of 276?

Thank you.

  • I would wait and take 276.

The CMPT 275/276 requirement with respect to coop is just that you have it completed or in progress when you go to seek for a job. If you apply to coop in the fall you more than likely won't be seeking until spring, by which point you can be enrolled in 276. As well I have heard that this requirement is actually pretty flexible.

If you really want to take 275 now I would speak with a software systems adviser first. I think you can get one to count for the other, but I am under the impression they discourage students from doing it.

276 is actually a fair bit different than 275, and in my opinion is the better course. As well 276 will prepare you better for the other software systems courses 373/473. Plus Brian Fraser has historically taught 276 and he is better than whoever will be teaching 275.
  • But wouldn't it be difficult taking a course and doing co-op at the same time? I've been trying to reach the advisers but can't seem to get a reply from them.
I agree on B.Fraser. He's the best professor I've come across so far.
  • Co-op usually takes two terms before you get a job. You spend the first term applying, doing workshops, BOL I, and preparing your documents. Then in the second term you do BOL II and apply for jobs. By this schedule you would apply in the fall and then be taking 276 while searching for a job. Then you will be done 276 in april and have a job for the summer. This is generally how people do it when they are starting coop at the beginning of their second year.

Have you already signed up for coop, done the workshops, and are getting ready to seek in the fall? If so then you should speak to a coop adviser and ask them if you need to have one of 275/276 in order to seek. If they say yes then go to a software systems adviser and confirm that you can use 275 to satisfy the 276 requirement. If they say yes then take 275 I guess. I wouldn't ask the academic adviser about coop or the coop adviser about academics though. I have found in the past they don't know each others requirements as well as you might think and it could lead to being misinformed.

Have you been emailing them? In my experience advisers are not the best at responding to email in a timely fashion (I imagine they get a lot of email.) If it is important you should go in and visit one in person.
