Philosophy?

edited July 2014 in General
Well, I've been researching on what kind of courses I should take at SFU since I am starting my 1st year real soon.
I think I'm interested in Philosophy, so I was hoping to take it, because people say that they should take what they enjoy.
However, I researched if anyone else enjoyed it or was able to get a good mark out of it...The results were very bad.
It made me hesitate now...I really want to have a good record for my University years, but people kept saying negative things about the course I want to take...So I don't know anymore. Are there anyone out here that actually enjoyed any Philosophy classes?

  • You have the right idea wanting to take courses you are interested in. By doing that you will get the most out of what classes you decide to take, and will likely have better marks to show for it too. What program are you entering into?

I enjoyed the one Philosophy class I took (PHIL XX1). I think a lot of the negativity around here is from people who are not Philosophy majors and took a 100 level philosophy course thinking it is just going to be an easy elective.

The biggest thing that seems to trip people up in a bunch of the lower division philosophy classes are the papers. Philosophy papers are often graded differently than English papers and it catches some people by surprise. If you work hard though I am sure you will do just fine.

If you are interested in philosophy I would definitely not let people who have had a bad experience deter you from trying it. If you are still worried about it though maybe someone else around here can recommend an easier/particularly interesting 100 level Philosophy course.
  • Thanks! I have decided to take Phil 100w for sure now. Hopefully I will be able to do well in it...:)
