How can I make new friends?

Hi, I will be starting my studies at SFU in September 2014. I got accepted to psychology. I'm so excited yet nervous with how I'm going to adapt to the change from high school to university! Any advice or tips for me? Especially on how to make new friends? Thanks everyone :)

  • talk to ppl in classes and especially tutorials
  • Join clubs, do orientation, talk to people in class, join a sports team, etc.

Clubs are probably easiest. What environment could be more conducive to making friends than one where everybody already has 1 interest in common?
  • Congrats & welcome!
Its already been mentioned but I would defs recommend orientation, as they usually group you by faculty, the people in your group will most likely be the people in you classes and the program is generally geared towards helping students make that transition from high school to university. Depending on how out going you are (im certainly not lol) talking to people in class/tutorials can be tough because for most classes people usually keep to themselves, but you're in your first year! Take the plunge and strike up a convo :) Join clubs and volunteer! There's so many opportunities to volunteer on campus and you can meet a lot of great people that way :) check out postings with SFU Surreys Student Ambassador Program (you dont have to be an SFU Surrey student for this, they post a variety of volunteer positions), myinvolvement.sfu.ca,  and your faculty's student society is also a good place to start!
  • I'm starting in fall as well and in psychology!

Well join clubs and talk to your peers. That's what I plan on doing haha
  • Make sure you don't bring any pets like the one in your avatar.
