Switching to Comp Sci

MXC
edited May 2014 in General
Hi there, I'm in a bit of a predicament at the moment. At first I wanted to get into the UBC pharmacy program, but cuz I couldn't keep my grade up I wasn't able to get in. Now I've decided to switch into comp sci from science. But I'm still unsure about this because I've never taken a comp sci course before. I thought I'd get into comp sci because to me, programming, coding seems kinda interesting, and I like computers and all that shizz although I have no experience with it.

I was reading the requirement for switching to comp sci and they needed 2 comp sci/1math or 2math/1 comp sci course.
I got a C+ in MATH 151 and a C- in MATH 152 and retook MATH 152 and got a D.

Seeing my alrdy crappy math grades, will this make it highly unlikely to get into comp sci? Or should I just stick with science?
I'm very confuddled with what I should do :/

Should I see an adviser?

Thanks for any feedback :)

Give Software Systems a look, less math, more programming and software related courses. MATH 152 and MACM 316 aren't required for it.
  • you will struggle in CS. you need to be strong in math to do well in cs. serious.
  • i agree, check out software systems-its slightly less math, much more application - which is what most people are looking for anyways. you dont need to necessarily be strong in math for it. math has never been my strong point (having done math 151 twice because thats how bad i was) but it hasn't stopped me from doing well in my other cmpt courses. if you've got a knack for/interest, in comp sci/sosy - go for it! try a first year programming course and see how you like it - but above all, definitely see an advisor!
    good luck! :)
  • Hi guys, thanks for the feedback.

I've decided on taking the Joint Major program for Comp sci and MBB since I've already taken most of the courses that fit right into this program.

Just a few things I was wondering with regards to what courses I should take for Fall.
I've already taken STAT 201 which I've read that is the equivalent of STAT 270, but the program requires that I take STAT 270. Does anyone know if my STAT 201 can substitute for STAT 270? Or would it be best if I asked an adviser? Are there any ad-hoc online advisers?
  • I am under the impression STAT 201 is much easier than STAT 270 so I think it will be unlikely they will accept it as fulfilling the requirement.

Talk to a computer science adviser, but I expect they will require you to take 270.
