How hard is it to transfer into applied science?

edited May 2014 in General
So i'm currently a first year student and this is my 3rd semester. I got rejected by software system when i applied for university so
im in IAT program right now, but i've been taking Software System major required courses cuz i want to transfer back into software system.

So just wanna ask if anyone ever had experience in transferring into computer science/software system or applied science. Like..are they really strict on those stuffs.

On the website it says "Simon Fraser University students applying for School of Computing Science admission are selected on the basis of an admission computing-related grade point average (CRGPA)." What will be the minimum CRGPA that can give me a chance?

Courses that i've completed are CMPT 130,135,150 MSE 110  MATH 150 MACM101.
I know i will need 3 qualifying courses to transfer but im not gonna use CMPT 135,150 since i didnt do good in those two.
I'm currently taking MATH 232, CMPT 135 (retaking), and CMPT 165 (for fun).

Also i've heard that if i didn't get in for the first time, i can reapply to transfer. <-- is this true?

  • I am under the impression that transferring in general is pretty easy. It seems like you already have the courses you need now to apply. I am not sure what the GPA requirement is. I thought it used to be posted online but I do not see it there any more. You should ask an adviser. If I were to guess I would say it is likely somewhere around 2.5.

Also note from the application page:
    • Duplicate courses may be used, but we will only consider your first attempt for application purposes.

    Thanks~
Yea, but i guess i will not use CMPT 135,150 cuz i didnt do good enough :(. So i will probably need to wait for cmpt 225 or 250 . I'm really scared that i can't get in,cuz i have no backup plan like taking some IAT courses. xd
  • You could use two math and one computing.
  • Haha but i have no computing course that i could use right now, since they won't take the mark from cmpt 135 after i retake it.
  • Ahh I assumed you could use CMPT 130. My bad. Well then, keep doing what you are doing I suppose.
  • I emailed an advisor about this a while back and they said to look at the applied sciences admission average (2.8 for this summer): http://www.sfu.ca/students/admission-requirements/admission-averages.html

I am in a similar boat (transferred to SFU in to engineering as I did not have the required courses but have always been planning on computing science,) and that is all the info I was able to get on it. Good luck!
  • Does that GPA mean CGPA or the CRGPA ._.?
    Thanks
  • Crgpa, but I would imagine that you could get in with lower than that. It's just an average.
