ARCH 100 via DE

edited April 2014 in General
Anyone taken this course? What are the quizzes based on? Vocab and main concepts or specific questions?

How many words are the assignments?

  • Hey crimematic, I've taken this course via DE. Quizzes are based on readings from textbook and "extra readings" which are research papers or web pages. Everything is fair game in the quiz including vocab, dates, places, heck even those "trivia" information found in the textbook. It's open book though, so there's that.

I forgot exactly how long the assignments were but what I remember for sure is that they aren't long. Maybe a page or two at most of single spaced. The main project is a project where you literally pick trash throughout the term (3 times from 3 places) and analyze it. You will then make a report about it. It's really easy if you do the work. Though, if you're good at BS, you really don't even need to collect trash at all.
  • How many questions are the quizzes and how much time do you have?

Is it necessary to read the textbook or could I use my friend's notes from the lecture version for quizzes?

    Thanks!
  • If I remember correctly, it's 40 questions and you're given 1 hour but I'm not 100% sure. I don't know how related the lecture and DE versions are but lecture from DE alone is absolutely not enough. I found that questions were really taken from all over the place so I recommend if you want to get a good grade (my def. of good is 85+), it's best to read the textbook.
  • Do you know anything about ARCH 131? (i.e. whether you need the textbook for the final?) I'm really looking for an dist ed course that doesn't require a lot of readings
  • Yup, just so happens that I do :) If you'd rather not have lots of readings then I think you'll like ARCH 131. For that course, Dennis's notes would suffice for the final. The other components of the course are: 1) weekly study questions where you are presented with a question and you need to do some research and write a 1-2 page (double spaced) answer 2) online discussion where you post an answer to a weekly question 3) research paper. You actually don't need the book to get a good grade. Note that this was through WebCT, I'm not sure if they changed anything in the transition to canvas. Some courses like BPK 140 for example I know changed some stuff when they transitioned to canvas.
  • That sounds a lot better than ARCH 100 :)

I guess it really just depends on your TA but were the online discussions and study questions marked quite easily? Just wondering because I see that they're worth a combined 50% of your grade.

Also, what was the format and length of the final?

    Thanks!
  • Yes, for the online discussion, as long as you post something that makes sense every week, it's basically free marks. For the study questions, what I did was find at least one article from a journal (doesn't have to be peer reviewed) talking about the topic and summarize that. I got 100% each week from doing that and it doesn't really take a lot of effort.

The format of the final was multiple choice, true or false, matching (like match left side to options from the right side), and an essay worth almost half the exam (you choose a topic from a list he gives you).
