About student loans

edited December 2013 in General
Is it too late to apply for the Spring 2014 student loan?

I am on my second BOT, with 9 credits for the semester. I can still apply for the full - time student loan, right?

Also, would the SFU financial advisor be able to help me apply for it, as in if i make an appointment with the advisor, can i apply during that appointment?

Thanks. Also happy early new years.

  • You can apply anytime before the last 6 weeks of classes end. So, yes.

Not much point going to see a financial advisor, all he/she's going to do is give you the website and links and probs a sheet with instructions on how to apply and stuff. Don't expect to have a step-by-step thing throughout the whole application process. Just learn how to do it yourself, everything is online, they make it super simple.
  • are you also under student loan?

I applied for it today, but is wondering if i can get the tuition by the 16th of this month...not really possible, right?

  • ^^Nope, you know how long it takes for government to push through paperwork...should have applied before semester starts
  • Yes, unfortunately.

It's possible but very slim chance, don't count on it. It takes 6 weeks max for it to be processed and told not to call about it until 7 weeks has passed. I can re-call mine being done in 2.5-3 weeks at time of application. They probably work a bit faster knowing that the majority of the population are last-minute people and it's nearing the beginning of the semester for most schools.

If you're worried about paying the late fee though, I was late to pay like I think all my semesters since being at SFU lol but never paid the late fee once. One semester was because StudentAid BC lost my MFAA, other semester was just late but no penalty, and another semester I paid like 70% of the tuition with my own money and then student loans paid the rest after the due date without late fee.

Even though the tuition date is stated as the 16th, it actually isn't. Even if you're "late", as long as you pay before the the first day of February, it will still go through as on time and there won't be a late fee.

I always apply for student loan around the 12th or so each semester (so after the semester has already started) and I get my loan before the end of the month and there's no issues.
  • yeah thanks guys. you guys helped alot.

I contacted the financial advisor, and she told me that there should not be much trouble in getting the loan, but i cannot get the tuition for the BOT course...oh well.

I will probably have to make alot of calls for the next few days to make sure whether i can get the full tuition or not, since i am living at my parents house and had no jobs since october.
  • @Kevin_CMNS Wow thanks dude, that's so good to know. Definitely super helpful and save some worries for the rest of my uni :D

I doubt you'll be able to get loans for your BOT since it's not actual credits going towards your degree is it?
  • lol im sorry, but are you guys trolling about the 12th of each semester thing?

Im not trying to be skeptical, but Kevin's last thread about replacing grades makes me wonder...

and exactly how you said it, BOT doesnt go to actual credits, so no loans for that :(.
  • lmao @Kevin_CMNS trolls so much that people don't even know if he's serious or not when actually trying to help hahahahaha
  • I'm retaking 11 credits worth of courses this semester, and a 3 credit course that i have not taken b4. I prolly won't get a student loan will I?
  • Might be able to get part-time depending on your available resources and income during the study period.
  • I'm actually serious about this one.
  • Pro tip: @Kevin_CMNS is ALWAYS serious. bitch.
