I've never taken a poli sci class before, but they seem interesting. Can anyone give me a quick idea of what to expect?

  • from what i've seen and heard so far, it seems that it's hard to do well for political science courses, i may be wrong though

^^what she said. The political science department in SFU has become really small, lacking in funding, and ideologically divided (trust me, those who have lived and witnessed the "dark ages" of departmental infighting and the fallout after would know). That said, it's fine to take courses in the Poli Sci department for extra credits or for minors...but if you want to do something worth while in the field I would recommend you to either go to UBC or other institutions with bigger and better department as well as more variety in courses and diverse political bias. Another option for those interested in international affairs and politics would be international studies (IS)
  • I took pol 151 distance ed and found it super easy! It was really interesting, and hardly any memorization (it was literally all writing papers)
  • Yeah it's more about writing. Intro poli sci courses expect to be boring and smaller classes. Which allow for more discussion but still boring. Not something insanely hard though. Easy to get in the B's with minimal effort.
  • @whydoihavetoregister Was it international studies that broke off from poli sci?  I remember reading something about that somewhere.
  • @ezc not exactly, the IS department is a mix mash of historians, political scientists, and economists. Though a few courses that used to be offered by the political science department are now under IS.
