Can you apply to co-op without having all the required courses yet?

Kind of like high school where you can apply to university without having all your grades in yet. I need one more course for next semester then I can do co-op. Thanks.

Yep. I'm pretty sure the required courses just need to be done before you are released to seek.

In general the earlier you apply for coop the better.
  • Why? Does the selection process take that long?
  • I applied to CRIM co-op this semester and expect to start in the summer.

When I asked a co-op advisor if there were any classes I need to complete before starting co-op she said no but I saw on SIS that to enroll you need to do all these courses:

So when I asked the CRIM advisor he said he didn't know so I have no idea now. I just realized like two days I never took CRIM 220 (don't ask how I could forget to take a required course...) so I'll have to take it next semester but I know it'll be full because it is every semester and I get late enrolment dates...
  • Well you have to complete BOL I, three workshops, and have drafts of your documents approved before you can be released to seek (unless you are in a faculty with slightly different requirements.) While you could technically do this in the first few weeks of a semester people usually spend a semester doing it prior to their first seeking semester. So you would apply two semesters before your first intended work term.

As I say you can do all of the workshops and start seeking in the same term, but you will be at a bit of a time disadvantage and coop advisors usually try to steer people away from doing this.

On the topic of required courses for coop, I have heard that sometimes they arent really that required. For instance In computing I was told by an advisor once that you do not neccessarily need CMPT 275 before your first coop term as the official description states. I don't know how this applies to other faculties, but if you find you are short a course and don't want to wait to do it it might be worth asking a coop advisor.
  • @crimematic I'm in exact same sitch! I was also referring to and based my stuff on that list that you gave as well. So is the advisor right or wrong? Perhaps they are both wrong as the co-op advisor didn't know that some faculties have requirements and the crim advisor just doesn't know about co-op and also rarely knows much because he's Gabe Sauro lol.

@ryan What drafts of documents do you mean? Like resume and stuff? Because I have that already pretty updated too and I got an SFU one-on-one advising thing to help me improve it as well.
  • I might just wait next semester to apply then. That way I can take my leftover required course next sem., apply while taking the course (hopefully assuming they'll let me even though it's not completed yet but in progess), take summer school and do BOL I and those workshop thingies then co-op in the Fall semester. Does that sound okay?
  • Yeah resume/sample cover letter. This is either a quick or slow process based on how much effort you put into your documents to begin with.

In terms of who to talk to for crim I would say someone from this page http://www.sfu.ca/coop/programs/arts/contact.html . If you have already talked to one of them then I'm not to sure who would be next.

If I were you I would just apply now. They run BOL's online usually every 2 weeks so you could get it out of the way. You could also do the workshops, then complete any remaining courses in the Spring while seeking. Summer is usually the best coop term in terms of job availability, so it might be worth targeting.
  • I prefer to take summer school so I can take it easy during the summer and still have fun though. And I'd rather do easy online courses like BOL I and II during the summer when I have more free time. I appreciate the helpful tips though thanks.
