Is it possible to catch up after missing four classes of STAT 100?

edited September 2013 in General
As the title suggests, is this class easy enough for someone who has no comprehension of math (my current math level is most likely around grade 11)?

I've missed the first two weeks (well, technically three classes, but due to circumstances, I won't be able to attend the fourth one on Thursday). If I enter the class starting the third week, will I still be able to do well?

  • Yeah you should be able to catch up. You will just need to go over the content you missed. Nothing in the course is particularly difficult.
  • Hell yeah. Easiest class I have ever taken at SFU. You should be fine. Just work hard.
  • I only have Math 11 too and only got 86% in it. Will I still likely get an A? Without having to go to office hours every week and get help, which is what I had to do for Math 11 basically.
  • I would say you could. The only math in the course when I took it was like elementary school math.
  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeet.
  • The course follows an S-curve in difficulty so yes, you can catch up on the first four weeks and still do well. You'll have to (really) study the first weeks carefully because some of the material won't come up again until the exam, and the rest is foundational for everything else.

It's usually the last 1/3 of the class which determines between an A and a C, which is when you find out that you're hooped for not actually mastering the easy sections earlier.

P.S. Buy the recommended calculator. Seriously.
  • You need graphing calculator I assume?
  • Certainly not. I don't even remember there being a recommended calculator in 100 to be honest. Perhaps that has changed.
  • Okay *phew* I heard those things are expensive af.
  • @BeAnBeAn Not a graphing calculator, no. I can't find it now, but it's some $15 multi-line deal with probability functions. Nobody noticed for the first month an change, but then those who brought something else had a rough time learning how to use the advanced functions. The TAs can't know every make and model. (shrug)
