Any point in joining the Golden Key

edited August 2013 in General
I got a letter yesterday from the Registrar congratulating me for being in the top 15% in terms of GPA in my major (Criminology) and they were encouraging me to join the Golden Key. Is it a good club for networking/etc?  I am still slightly unsure in terms of what the club does. Any past or current members/ people who know the club in general mind helping me out and telling me what the SFU chapter specifically does.

Right now I am leaning toward not joining because $90 seems like a lot of money to dish out as a fe to join.

  • I have always decided against signing up personally. The impression I have got is that their at scholarships available, but few people get them. Otherwise they do some community service here and there, and then apparently the networking aspect. The sfu chapter seems to have a Facebook page that lies dormant most of the year, with the exception of a few months in the fall around recruiting.

My bigger problem with golden key as an organization is that they seem to only spend a fraction of what they take in on the members, while keeping a relatively high cut for themselves. There was a couple good peak articles on this written years ago that you can still find online.

So I'd say if you want to volunteer and network then consider it (though you could join other clubs and do these things for free.) If you are looking for something to pad your resume with I'd pass.
  • I didn't know there was a semi-active sfu subreddit. thanks for the link.

No point at all.  They give out a few scholarships but those pretty much go to the "executive" or people really involved on that side.  Like Ryan said, if you want to volunteer, there are better clubs out there for that.

To be honest, if I was hiring and someone put Golden Key on their resume, I would look at it more as a negative rather than a positive.  But everyone's opinion would be different in that regard.
  • just did my research, most people who joined regretted it
  • No don't join it, they asked me to join last semester but I found out it's actually an evil cult and they haze you for a year or so before you are an actually complete member and can partake in their satanic blood orgies and they make you paint your private part gold hence the name "The Golden Key". Legend has it that no one has truly ever seen the leader's face because it's the shape of a key-hole.
  • Hahaha secret societies, why can't they just make an illuminati club for shits and giggles?
  • ^Thanks for the idea. I mean they already had the sacred secret orgy club which they advertised on this forum before and I happened to be part of. I mean they have all sorts of religious clubs anyway so why not Free Mason club or Illuminati club?
  • @Lakerfanatic Can I propose we start a Wiccan club together? Serious question.
