Coop and Student Loans

edited August 2013 in General
Does anybody know if you can do coop term and get student loan?

  • That's what i'm asking.
  • That's what I'm asking too.
  • I haven't done this myself but a few of my friends were able to get student loans on a coop term.
  • Students on a coop term are considered full time students, so I don't see why not. Then again I'm not sure why you would really need to. Coop tuition is less than regular tuition, plus you will be working getting paid (I hope...those volunteer/stipend jobs are often traps depending on your major)
  • I'm pretty sure they will give a student loan for the term you do co-op in, but when you return to school you won't get anymore loan since they expect students to save the earnings from the term they were working. I missed a term at sfu, and wasn't able to get loan for the term after, since they told me I'm expected to use the missed term to work and save up for upcoming courses
  • ^That doesn't make sense. It's solely based on your resources vs. need, not whether you saved up the resources or not.
  • i made $1000 over the last 4 months but i already spent it all. Studentaid bc will still count part of my $1000 as my resources calculation even though there is none left.
  • Thanks guys

I was only asking because one question asks "are you working full time", and if I answer yes, It says I cannot get student loans.
  • Co-op is different from working full-time. Co-op counts as school I guess.
  • I've confirmed the following information with SFU.

You cannot get student loans while on coop term; however you can complete an interest free application.
  • that is good to know, ill keep that in mind
  • @beanbean The fact that you weren't attending school the term before is a huge factor with the calculation of resource vs. need. Trust me, i had a long argument over the phone about this with student aid BC. They said I could appeal, since I wasn't working; but, it is expected that students work and save up for the upcoming terms.
  • ^hm never knew that. Good incentive to never take time off I guess.
  • Yep, I'm never going to take a term off again
  • Or you could, and just not waste all your money on Runescape gold.

  • That's the second time I've been called a stalker in a matter of 2 days on this forum btw. I'm on a roll.
  • LIES i sit in back row of all my classes XD how does it feel to be labelled stalker LOL
  • Pretty fuckin awesome. And well I meant to say I sit beside you not behind.
