  • jk ya it's not worth $45 for sure cuz the food they give you is shit and worth like $3 but you should go because you will meet most of your fellow students there that you'll probably talk to for your whole first-year and have classes together so it's worth it and you get a personalized tour and stuff like that you know. And better then sitting on your ass at home because I know it's summer and who know's your OL might be hot as fuck
  • Yes go
  • Oui, Aller!
  • Yeah I was thinking that too..... could anyone talk about what goes on at the orientation? because I'm getting a tour this saturday and if the orientation isn't much more than a tour then....
  • Main thing about orientation: meeting fellow motherfuckers that you spend time with for two days, some music shit and ice-breakers if you're into that, different presentations about many aspects of SFU etc.
  • Haha thanks, clear and concise.
  • you get a tour of the school and shit. and food.  and maybe meet new people though its likely you'll never talk to them again l0l
  • Lol $45 worth of food....... I'll pass. Again, thanks
  • just come, it wont hurt ur feelings...
  • It depends - is lunch included?
  • Yeah it is, but I think it's like two slices of Fresh Slice pizza LOL
  • Is it worth $45? No, probably worth around 20 bucks max.  I would tour you for 5-10 bucks...All I need is a drink or two cause its ****ing hot outside
Should you go? Yeah why not. Maybe your leader will show you special hotspots like where all the good places to eat and the places where the cancerous asbestos are =)
Did I go? No, I just brought a friend to SFU and toured together like two dummies

I made friends with ppl in the orientation, easier that way, you can become study groups/buddies if you guys end up taking the same courses later :)
Definitely worth going i'd say, but yeah $45's a bit high
If you have get good OL's, they can help you out too :)
  • Not really imo. Well of course it depends on the person but in my experience, my group kind of sucked and we never really clicked. Our leader was nice but the tour and food is NOT worth $45! You can get access to mentors once you get in SFU anyway - business mentors, arts mentors, etc which are free and they can give you the same if not better advice about transitioning to sfu..SFU also has free tours you can sign up for irrc because I signed up for one for sfu surrey and it was not bad. And dude, the food isn't even that great it was just hot dogs.

I mean you might make awesome friends but on the other hand you can make just as awesome friends by joining sfu clubs or even in your labs, tutorials etc. Just my 2 cents!
  • If you can spare the $45 then it would be beneficial to go. You'll end up meeting people in your classes, or at least your tutorials/labs, anyway. And of course, clubs.
  • @loversandlies How does one acquire said art mentor?

And yeah, it totally depends on your group lol. If your group is normal and not anti-social and never go to any events and don't talk at all it is gonna be stupid. I think you should go anyway because we all know you're just gonna spend that $45 on nothing better like weed, overpriced coffee that you can get at McDonald's but you buy it because its "free trade" and has some weird foam design shit that looks like someone jizzed in your cup of joe and you'll end up destroying anyway when you drink it, McDonald's and $1.75 granola bar from the vending machine.
  • ^ Here lol:

But yeah it does depend on your group. I never ended up seeing anyone from my group and yeah there wasn't a lot of talking so it wasn't that great of an experience. My other friend did it and didn't enjoy it either, but I have another friend who went and she liked it. Depends lol.
  • im still friends with some people in my orientation group, you also meet people outside your orientation group as well. i think its worth it for the experience
  • honestly u meet like 4 people that are in your group. i havent kept up with any of them. only part thats good is the free stuff and the tour... which you could probably do yourself lol
  • hope I can find some friends who can help me with my LOL promotion games...lol im stucked at silver 2-.-
  • ya dude I see people playing that during breaks at university
  • Last year my freind just showed up and they put him in a group for free, so dont pay, just go sign in
  • ^ahhh shit I shoulda done that. Find a cool OL and just do it.
  • I  had a good leader...worth every penny because .orientation is the only time you'll ever feel good about university... once your in ...your on your own so please go so at least you get a feel of what your next 4 years will be like

Well the orientation is goes on for 2 days (LITTLE KNOW FACT), first day, you play icebreaker games, tour around and then eat lunch. Then you play more games, meet mentors from the same program as you that can answer your questions/give you tips. You get some free stuff and the group in your orientation are mostly people from your faculty/program. Next day you do tours again....and i forgot what else you do....

But it doesn't stop there because now you have connection with your orientation leader, you can ask him/her tips or advice throughout the year. There are often monthly orientation events like dogeball or movies with your orientation group. In december, you go to Red Robins and have FREE dinner with all the people that went to orientation.

Is it worth it? Well it depends on the people in your orientation group...but really you should take on every opportunity to meet people.

    sorry my engrish sucks
  • ^Your English was fine and you totally put the icing on the cake. Well said. Totally forgot about the extra stuff after the orientation.

And yeah my OL happened to be the Chief Officer of the Surrey Campus Committee (SCC) so I got to do a lot of fun stuff with that too and got her number so I can easily text her a question anytime.
  • It's not worth it. Don't waste $45 on something so pointless. If you want to meet people, just join a club.
