Cmpt 275

How bad is cmpt 275? I've heard nothing but terrible things about it, so i'm hesitant to take it. I dont know who the prof is next term but most likely tsang.. is it worth waiting and doing cmpt 276 instead (with brian fraser)? Any thoughts on doing 3 other cmpt/macm courses alongside with 275?

    I think this largely depends on whether you are in computer science or software systems. If you are in SoSy you should wait to take 276. I think you can technically do 275 and use it as credit for 276, but I wouldn't recommend it. On the flip side if you are in comp sci I am pretty sure you cannot use 276 to get credit for 275.

    In terms of difficulty I can only pass on what I have heard. Many say it depends largely on your group. The course will likely require you to learn some iphone development, and then hopefully you have a good app idea from there.

    How many cmpt/macm courses you can take along with it will depend on you. I generally found macm to be not terribly time consuming, just hard. So that should be fine. Then it would depend on the computings. 4 courses consisting of 3 cmpt and 1 macm could be manageable.

    40-50% of your grade is based on you and your team. So if you just do ok on the exams, then you have to get it together for your project. And yes, the difficulty depends heavily on your team cause if they don't do shit, then you will end up having to do most of the work yourself which will take up alot of time and effort. I was lucky enough to get a very good team who did all the coding while i was the manager taking care of other things. Ended up winning starbucks cards for the best app :) Its a gamble, but if you are in cmpt, you have to take it. There's no way around it.

    Brian Fraser is an awesome teacher, definitely take it with him if you can(especially over Tsang).

    If you are in SoSy, then you should take 276. I was considering the same thing back when I had to take 275/276. Ended up doing 276, and it was the right choice. Take 225/250 etc instead, then do 276 in spring.

    I'm just guessing Brian Fraser will be teaching. Of course, it may be someone else, but he has taught it for the last 3 or so years. So, pretty much everyone recommends 276... I'm leaning towards taking 276, but I'd like to seek jobs for co-op during next term. So I'm still confused lol. I suppose waiting one more term isn't really a big deal

    If you have 276 in progress they will let you seek for coop. I was in 276 when I got my first coop job.

    I'm probably taking 276 spring... My counselor confirmed it's Tsang for Fall 2013 :P
    Is 276 interchangeable with 275? Or does 276 put you on the Software Systems path?

    Thanks for the answers, everyone! It's really helpful! Also, @CompSciStudent, I think it's not interchangeable, but software systems can do either according to our gradplan (and what advisors told me).

    If it's Tsang, then I REALLY don't wana do 275. Lol, all depends on what courses are available by my enrollment date now. Hopefully I can get into something else.
