SFU Undergrad Apply-Scholarships and Awards

edited May 2013 in General
Does anyone have an idea of how the undergrad scholarships and awards are given out? What are the specific parameters and decision-making factors that the scholarship committee follows in giving them out to certain individuals. Besides the obvious ones on the financial aid website that sifts out some students such as: required 3.5 CGPA, 9 units etc.

Because I've applied to both scholarships, awards AND bursaries for several semesters to no avail.

My only reason for maintaining a high GPA each semester is to get scholarships but I feel like it's a stupid reason because I'll never get one anyway so maybe I should stop being try-hard and taking it a bit easier and cut myself some slack...

Tips people? Give me some justification to use as an excuse to not try as hard in school anymore and just do "good" instead of the best I can hahahaha

  • I know about bursaries because I got quite a few...basically like everything there's a committee that reviews and approves your application.  Also did you include a personal letter/statement detailing WHY you need the bursaries (can't say anything about scholarships or maybe other people with higher GPA got them before you) ie. I'm poor, my parents kicked me out of the house, I can't pay rent, etc.) Most likely if you demonstrate you need the money so badly for school they'll usually give it to you.
  • @lakerfanatic say whaaaat???? what's your CGPA if I may ask? cuz that needs to be 3.5 for scholarships and 3.67 for the open one
  • ohhh I see. Well you get it for sure then
  • for the scholarships that are based solely on GPA and whatever special requirement  (eg. science students only) , pretty much that one person with the highest cGPA will get most of the scholarships. Everybody else has no hope in getting it.

    that's what i think...
  • But you can't have an existing on-going scholarship. You can only have one from SFU
