240 is not that bad, for some courses you need a min b in 232 if you don't take 240. I would take a look at all the prereqs for your upper division courses to be sure.
I'm also in CS, and i took 232. I think 232 is easiest since you are given examples to applications instead of pure linear algebra theory and proofs. Sure you do that too in 232 but not as much. Up to you what you like.
I'm in CS and I just took 232. From what I've heard, 240 is harder but then again, the class average for midterm 1: 72%, midterm 2: 49%, final: 51%. The thing about math is you just need lots of practice especially when you don't understand the material very well. So do ALL the homework questions and REVIEW the answers after the solutions are posted. For studying, and I've found this even more important for linear algebra, make sure you know where properties come from (by examining the proof) and make connections between topics and concepts as you go. In linear algebra, everything is connected so if you study properly, you should be ok. By doing the above I got A+ in that class without curving/scaling.
The final class average was not shown to us so unfortunately, I don't have that information. However, here's the weight distribution for the exams and the class averages:
Quiz - 10% - don't have the class average
Midterm 1 - 20% - class average is 72%
Midterm 2 - 20% - class average is 49%
Final - 50% - class average is 51%
The professor said that the midterms were going to be scaled since the average was low for the second one but he did not specify how he was going to do it or by how much. If you're not into proofs, definitely take 232 instead. I mean there are proofs since it cannot be a math class without proofs but there's significantly less emphasis on them compared to 240 based on what I heard. Either way, just follow my advice and you should be good.
Hey thanks! :) Yeah I don't really care for proofs, especially when there are questions regarding them on tests.. ugh... The class average is probably around 55~60 from those grades... Do you know if the class got scaled to a C+ or something? Not looking forward to taking linear algebra now :(
Sorry, I do not know if the class got scaled to a C+. As I mentioned above, I had a A+ before any scaling/curving. I do not mean to brag about it, just letting you know why I have no idea if the class got scaled. That said, if I'm not mistaken, the decision to scale is entirely up to the professor you have so I'm sure this varies between semesters.
thanks. all these comments have been very helpful. Seems like the majority is suggesting MATH 232 so I guess I'll go for that. I also have two question I would like to ask as well. Will 1 hour to commute from bby campus to Surrey campus be enough? I have class at Burnaby before Math 232 so I was just wondering if anyone know. Also, have anyone had Daniela Marinescu as a prof before? I saw terrible ratings one rateyourprof but here were only 2 and not for this course either so....
Protips from a guy whose taken several math courses twice:
Finding the full solution manual for the textbook makes it much easier to practice, and to understand the errors you make.
And for everything you doze off through or fall behind on in lecture, you can find all the same material on youtube taught at least as well as your prof probably can
The solution manual can be helpful, but also be careful that it doesn't lead to you thinking you understand material you really don't. Many questions are easy to understand once you are looking at the solution.
